"Oliver"

"Oliver" is a sweet little Carin Terrier like in the Wizard of Oz.  I had SO much fun painting Oliver.  He is sitting in the arms of someone who loves him!  At first I thought I'd just paint Oliver's sweet face, but quickly I realized; not knowing how his body would look naturally in that pose, I decided to put that loving arm in there, and I am REALLY glad!  It tells a story of love and sweetness!  Oliver's fauvist colors were FUN!  Buttery yellows and turquoise and green make the background colors.  I added a little bit of pattern in the background that adds a bit extra.  Oliver's fur has lots of blue and purple mixed in with some yellows that make some of the darks.  I added a bit of fauvist color to the arm that is holding Oliver; adding some fun!

 

Before I show Oliver in his display photos I wanted to talk a little about my process.  It's been basically the same throughout this project.  I mark carefully where the eyes go...and some important markers.  I then paint the eyes first, often followed by the nose; then the background and I finish with the rest.  Once I get the eyes placed, the nose is easy in relation to them...and the rest goes quickly.  I used the same brushes throughout the whole process. This project has helped me to improve my painting skills, as well as has given me "permission" to use brighter colors and fun interpretations.  I feel so blessed that so many sent in their photos of their pet babies, which made this whole experience that much more fun!  Thank you to everyone!!

 I have to say, for frame colors I have, this one was my favorite for Oliver.  So simple...

These frames are floater frames. These frames get their name from the illusion they offer—once the art is assembled inside the frame, it appears to float within it. I found these frames at pictureframes.com.  I'm not thrilled with their shipping prices (I think they are way too high, and they often ship one small frame in a giant box! ha), but you can watch for sales and deals that pop up on the top left of their website screen.

"Caber"

Caber was my friend Rebecca Ferring Gschwend's husband Dom's first Samoyed.  He was reported to be a real sweetie, but was afraid of EVERYTHING!  Except small animals like skunks! lol  I hear he ruined quite a few first dates as he had gotten sprayed!  However, a wine bottle, a camera; well, any simple household item sent him running!  Poor Caber!  He was well loved, however, so I say made out quite well!  It was fun painting Caber using fauvist coloring.  I kept his white pretty white for the strong contrast...but I used oranges and blues to give that good strong contrast.  The background is a soft green with yellow in it...I'm not sure how that translated on our computer monitors.  Caber comes ready to frame or can sit on an easel as shown below.

 This is a floater frame.  That means it shows all the edges instead of how the traditional frames take 1/2" from each side.  These floater frames were purchased through pictureframes.com.

"Riley"

On Hold for her Pet Mom

Riley is a "mitten paw" or polydactyl cat.  I love having a little insight into all these beautiful animals!  Rebecca Ferring Gschwend is Riley's pet mom...and says that he was her best friend for over 20 years!  I used some of my current favorite colors to paint Riley and slipped in a bit of pattern to add a little interest.  I probably didn't need to do this for this particular portrait, but Rebecca is a fellow artist and I thought she'd enjoy seeing it!  Riley comes ready to frame or he can sit on an easel as shown!

I love the way Riley is just LOOKING INTO YOUR SOUL! HA.  He looks good in all his display suggestions!  The frames can be purchased through pictureframes.com, and the easel I found at Hobby Lobby.

"Scout"

Scout is a pet kid of some friends of Michael Hofman.  He is getting a couple friends some pet portraits as a gift.  WHAT A NICE FRIEND!  I love these faces there the pups have their face right in the camera and they are obviously happy...Michael sent me a couple photos but lets me pick...the face just says...I love you...UNCONDITIONALLY! 

Scout is a fauvist dream...orange, green, purple, yellow! WOO HOO!  His beautiful brown eyes and that sweet come hug me face.  The colors in Scout may be a little off...they are not as bright and strong as here...but buttery.  It has been raining and the light is terrible for photographs!

Notice how the colors change ever so slightly with just the slightly different light in each photo.  I'll try to give you the closest to accuracy as I see them on my monitor!  What a challenge it is sometimes!

 This is TOO BRIGHT in the colors...the light was really dark in this photo, so my changes to get the VALUES correct make the background colors way too bright...think these colors only buttery...ha.  This easel is one I found at Hobby Lobby.

The background colors here are closer to actual...see the difference...the buttery look...however...the changes in the photo lightened Scout's colors a bit too much! HA!  The frame is a floater frame you can find at pictureframes.com.  CF1

This is the maple floater frame; CFS10.  I think color is pretty ok here...Scout MAY be a little darker than in this photo.

"Saucy Jack"

This is my friend Celeste's cat called "Saucy Jack".  I LOVE his name!  It is so hard to photograph purple things for some reason...they come out blue...so, Saucy Jack has more deep purple than blue, but I promise it looks great.  Such a fauvist flair!  I gave him a great apple green background to pull out his eyes; which were also a fun green!  Saucy comes ready to frame, or can sit on an easel like one shown; I purchased mine at Hobby Lobby.

"Millie"

"Millie" is sister to Bailey in my 101 Pet Portraits in 101 Days.  Their pet mom is Carol Crowder.  With Millie I stayed bright with burnt oranges and yellows.  The dark areas are the purples.  Millie also has a bit of a large negative space as I mentioned with Bailey, so I used the stamping of the honeycomb design to break up the negative space and give it a bit of pattern; which gives it the illusion of more texture.  This adds interest to this fauvist depiction of this beautiful horse!

It was not important to me to give a photo realistic view of Millie's bridle...to give an impression of a thing is often more powerful...this was also so with Bailey.  I wanted to focus on Millie, and to have given a realistic version of the bridle would have taken a little away from her since it is on her face...thus my decision.

"Lottie"

Lottie lives in England and is home waiting for her parents, Tony Thompson and Sherry Shoaf to return to her after their stay in the U.S. She was rescued from her Mom, Fran, who had a terrible stroke and could not keep her anymore.  Lottie was a special pup to paint in the fauvist tradition with bright colors...a challenge to get her to show certain detail without too many strokes.  I found her fun to paint!  I hope she gets to her pet parents really soon!  Lottie is ready to frame or can sit on a small easel just as she is!  Shipping for Lottie is set for the US...it may be more for out of the country.

"Takoda"

Takoda; an English Shepherd with beautiful brown eyes who had his own blog; yes, a celebrity in our midst!  Takoda's  pet mom is Mary Logson.  Mary lost her Takoda recently, so it was a privilege to paint him in memory!  Takoda comes ready to frame or sit on an easel!

I really enjoyed painting Takoda; keeping the pallet soft but strong!  Check out this beautiful dog in possible displays.  

 This easel can be found at Hobby Lobby.  The blues in Takoda's background are a bit more blue than green...another example of how light and computer monitors mess with color!  

 All the following floater frames can be purchased through pictureframes.com in their floater frame section.  I'm really liking Takoda in this GOLD LEAF frame CFS3.  Here the blue is still a bit too green, but in the maple frame below it is a little better.
