KiKi is a sweetie pie who actually has more purply blues than just the blue she looks like she has.  AGAIN, I cannot seem to get my purple hues to show up...but, her darks look great in blue or purple!  A fauvist interpretation with these fun colors instead of black.  Kiki has wonderful turquoise/cerulean blues for the highlights I saw in her coat! I enjoyed the strong contrast between her dark coat and those beautiful green eyes!  I also have become enamored with stamping into some of these backgrounds...FUN! Kiki's Pet mom is Bonnie Wells.  Kiki comes ready to frame or sit on an easel as shown.

 All these floater frames were purchased through pictureframes.com.  I think they can do better on shipping costs, but these frames were reasonable at $26.40.  Every time I purchased a frame I would comment that they need to improve on their shipping costs...who knows maybe one day they will! lol

"Oliver"

"Oliver" is a sweet little Carin Terrier like in the Wizard of Oz.  I had SO much fun painting Oliver.  He is sitting in the arms of someone who loves him!  At first I thought I'd just paint Oliver's sweet face, but quickly I realized; not knowing how his body would look naturally in that pose, I decided to put that loving arm in there, and I am REALLY glad!  It tells a story of love and sweetness!  Oliver's fauvist colors were FUN!  Buttery yellows and turquoise and green make the background colors.  I added a little bit of pattern in the background that adds a bit extra.  Oliver's fur has lots of blue and purple mixed in with some yellows that make some of the darks.  I added a bit of fauvist color to the arm that is holding Oliver; adding some fun!

 

Before I show Oliver in his display photos I wanted to talk a little about my process.  It's been basically the same throughout this project.  I mark carefully where the eyes go...and some important markers.  I then paint the eyes first, often followed by the nose; then the background and I finish with the rest.  Once I get the eyes placed, the nose is easy in relation to them...and the rest goes quickly.  I used the same brushes throughout the whole process. This project has helped me to improve my painting skills, as well as has given me "permission" to use brighter colors and fun interpretations.  I feel so blessed that so many sent in their photos of their pet babies, which made this whole experience that much more fun!  Thank you to everyone!!

 I have to say, for frame colors I have, this one was my favorite for Oliver.  So simple...

These frames are floater frames. These frames get their name from the illusion they offer—once the art is assembled inside the frame, it appears to float within it. I found these frames at pictureframes.com.  I'm not thrilled with their shipping prices (I think they are way too high, and they often ship one small frame in a giant box! ha), but you can watch for sales and deals that pop up on the top left of their website screen.

"BoBo" was a serious fellow I hear...a black lab.  I liked this photo of him because he looked rather happy...although serious, I like to think of him smiling right there!  I used strong dark blues and purples with some cerulean blues as the lighter areas...I gave him a true fauvist tongue with the strong color...but kept his beautiful brown eyes.  The buttery yellow and cerulean blue background seemed to be another color that was hard to photograph...The yellow on MY monitor seems too strong...but it is hard to know what your monitors show.  I would call it a squash; a buttery squash.  BoBo was pet kid to my friend Suzanne Grimes.  He is no longer, but I'm sure the whole family has great memories of him!

 I like him in the gold...that is because Gold is a cousin to orange; which is the opposite on the color wheel to blue...so, a good contrast...also, it is a good companion to the yellow.

"Kailai" is a beautiful chow/retriever mix pup that was rescued JUST IN TIME according to her pet mom Mary Ann Dany!  I see this face and am SO grateful to Mary Ann!  I hear she is quite a lady as she always sits with her legs crossed!  She loves Mary as she follows her around and listens to everything she has to say. 
I chose strong oranges and reds with just a bit of blue for balance in the fauvist way of working.  Remember a lady can be strong too! HA

"Corkie" is a special pup that's pet parents who sent in the photo are David and Terri Johnson; my brother and sis in law.  They gave Corkie to Terri's mother who was quite ill, and he remained her beautifully loving companion throughout the rest of her life.  Corkie was born to a Cocker Spaniel mom and a Dachshund dad.  The Cocker owners of Corkie's mom weren't too happy with this situation, but how can anyone be upset at the loving dog Corkie was!! 

Corkie needed bright colors to compliment his bright personality...also keeping in tune with the fauvist flair as I have been doing.

SO, I don't know if you have noticed that I have changed the name of my project...it has gone from 100 Pet Portraits in 100 Days to 101 Pet Portraits in 101 Days.  That was NOT a typo.  I have gotten a special photo from my co-grandma and awesome friend Diana Grimes of her wonderful Dalmation pup called Domino.  SO, she had the awesome idea to change the name to 101 and have Domino cap it all off and I LOVED IT!!  SO, from now on this is 101 Pet Portraits in 101 Days!  FUN!!

We are now JUST SHY of the half way mark, so if you want to see all the pets to vote on this section, friend me on facebook and you can see the whole 10!

Nelson's pet mom is also Amber; mom to Alex as well.  Nelson was awesome..I loved that stately face...or is it a curious one!  FUN either way.  I played with lighting...it wasn't really present in the photo, but the bright yellowy orange is, to me the light side...and the bluey purple the darker side...any way you look at it the color is FUN!

Misty was an interesting lady to paint.  I was intrigued by her intense look...it was as if she was trying to communicate telepathically! Gave me more than one interesting question to ask her as we worked.  Misty's pet mom is Bonnie Wells.  I so appreciate Bonnie for sending in her photo.  I also loved those ear tufts!

Misty would work in a floater frame, or a standard frame.  I want to make sure everyone knows that frames are not included in the price...I just like to give you ideas for framing in case you need them!

There is always pictureframes.com; click on floater frames and pick a color..( a floater frame just shows all the edges.).OR, you can go on line and find a 40% off coupon at Hobby Lobby and get them framed there.  I do that a lot for my own framing when it isn't me making them!  OR, simplest version of all...put your painting on an easel and voila`!

Just a quick reminder that on Monday I fly to Omaha for a couple of weeks to take care of my daughter and her family as she is kind enough to give me another grand child...this time a girl!!  SO, eventhough I will continue to post paintings, I won't be able to ship anything you may love and purchase until after March 13, 2015...I hope you will understand!!

WELL, WE ARE 1/4 THE WAY THROUGH THE PROJECT...AND I'M STILL JAZZED!!

Audrey reminds me of the Cheshire cat for some reason...I think it's her big ole beautiful eyes and her round face in this photo...but I LOVE all the color that came out of her...the simple bold brush strokes...she just seems so happy to live this way!  Audrey's pet parents are Carrie and Todd Johnson; Rachel Johnson's parents.  Rachel is pet mom to Emma and Elara I believe. 

Audrey looks nice in this black floater frame, but would also be fine in a standard frame.  You don't always have to have every part of an animal portrait showing...it's ok if part of an ear or about anything but eyes or mouth I'd say goes off the edge.

A note about these photos in the frame.  You may see a little raggedy stuff on the edges of these paintings when they are in the frame.  I always clean up the edges before I ship, but sometimes I take the photos when they are still wet, so I don't mess with the edges at that point...never fear, I won't send you a raggedy edged painting!

I really enjoyed painting Emma.  Rachael is her pet mom and was kind enough to share this photo.  In fact, Rachael is pet mom to 3 cats in this series...the other two girls coming up soon.  I have found this project to be so very rewarding!  I get to see these animals, paint them...and play with color and brush strokes.  I have learned so much about painting through this process.  I appreciate every single contributant!

You can find frames like this floater frame at pictureframes.com (the painting looks like it is floating inside the frame) (all sides and edges show!) .  Just type in floater frames and you can see all the choices.  The price is good...for these it is $26.40.  I'm not too fond of shipping which is $16.95 for one frame...however, it is still a bargain...and MOST of the time this site has a sale going...so you can get a little off!  Framing these portraits is easy...just cut a piece of cardboard the size of the bottom section...glue a small piece of 1/4" wood in the middle...glue the painting on and voila` you are done!!
