"MILLIE" 87/101 OF 101 PET PORTRAITS IN 101 DAYS © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Millie" is sister to Bailey in my 101 Pet Portraits in 101 Days.  Their pet mom is Carol Crowder.  With Millie I stayed bright with burnt oranges and yellows.  The dark areas are the purples.  Millie also has a bit of a large negative space as I mentioned with Bailey, so I used the stamping of the honeycomb design to break up the negative space and give it a bit of pattern; which gives it the illusion of more texture.  This adds interest to this fauvist depiction of this beautiful horse!

It was not important to me to give a photo realistic view of Millie's bridle...to give an impression of a thing is often more powerful...this was also so with Bailey.  I wanted to focus on Millie, and to have given a realistic version of the bridle would have taken a little away from her since it is on her face...thus my decision.

Millie in her display glory!  The easel I found at Hobby Lobby, and the frames I purchased through pictureframes.com.  I'm not thrilled with their shipping prices, but if you watch you can get deals; it shows in the upper left corner.

"BAILEY" 86/101 OF 101 PET PORTRAITS IN 101 DAYS © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

Bailey is my first horse in this project of 101 Pet Portraits in 101 Days.  I don't know much about Bailey, but the interesting thing about her was the composition; to make it ok to paint her in the 6"x6" format and keep it cohesive with the rest of the project.  I solved the problem in a fashion with pattern.  There is a larger negative space in this portrait than in most others, so I utilized pattern stamped into the background to "break up" the vastness of this negative space.  I very much liked the end result.  I have to say that the orangy color in the background is a bit darker than in this photo.  We have a very grey day and it affects the photos. sigh...I have decided, by this time in the project that it has has a profound effect on me...I will most likely continue to paint in the brighter color fashion that is the fauvist tradition.  As you will see in the reference photo there is a strong light on top of Bailey and I utilized that contrast, but added some awesome cerulean blue/turquoise in a very light value, contrasted with the burnt oranges, purples and reds in her coat.  White is white with a little blue and orange here and there.  All in all a great fun painting to do!  Bailey comes ready to frame or she can sit on an easel.

I want to make mention again WHY I add texture to these paintings.  Well, the first answer is I absolutely LOVE texture, even implied (not actual, but it looks like it) texture.  I think it adds another dimension to the interesting"ness" of a painting, it also makes it clear it is original and not a print.  It is part of what makes me a mixed media painter.  I've loved the many aspects it affords other than JUST a painting...which is OK too...just not for me at this time in my career!

Here is Bailey in all her glory with his display ideas!  Keep in mind the floater frames shown can be purchased through pictureframes.com.  This particular easel was purchased at Hobby Lobby.

"SILVER GIRL" A HORSE ORIGINAL OIL ON 7"X5" TEXTURED PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

Can't you just see this beautiful white girl giving you every bit of her attention! "Silver Girl" is painted in oil over a 7"x 5" textured MDF panel. She is lovingly framed in this unique frame made just for her. The outside is painted a soft grey to compliment her color scheme; distressed a bit, with a white distressed 7"x5" frame attached on top. Finished frame size is 11 1/2" x 9 1/4" Because of the nature of this frame structure, she is IN THERE PERMANENTLY! "Silver girl is ready to hang, or can sit on an easel.

As a way of explination about the frame I have added a new fun project to my list of things I do.  I enjoy finding frames and putting them together as is shown here.  The bottom frame is one, and the white one surrounding the painting is another.  I paint them, distress them...whatever suits my fancy.  IT'S FUN DOINS!  The REASON that "Silver Girl" is in this one to stay is that the openings for the two frames are the same, HOWEVER the lip that the painting sits behind is in the way of the top frame opening on the back, so I have to frame her in the white frame, then glue it on top over the grey one...I HOPE that makes sense.  WHEN I put a 6"x4" on top, the opening is small enough to reach in from the back of both...so, those paintings are interchangeable.  IF I ever find another way, I'll make adjustments...BUT, who would want to change this girl from her frame...after all it was made to suit her!! :)

"HOCUS P" A RABBIT ORIGINAL 6"X4" OIL ON TEXTURED PANEL; FRAMED © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Hocus P" a Rabbit is a dignified dude that I believe once worked for a magician, but quit BECAUSE it wasn't dignified enough. So, he has posed for his portrait to prove that he IS dignified. "Hocus P" is 6" x 4" painted in oil on a textured canvas panel and framed in a 11"x9" distressed off white solid wood frame! He is ready to hang or sit on a beautiful easel! "Hocus P" will be ready to ship on April 30, 2014 when he is dry.
I really DO enjoy finding or making frames for some of these paintings...I've added a frame to a recent addition to ETSY; "Hatchet" is now available framed or unframed!

I work hard to keep my prices affordable to the public!  I believe in sharing in life, and so, for these smaller paintings, I work hard to do this.  Sometimes prices seem a little confusing; well, at least to me if I didn't know why...alot of the differences come from what it costs me to frame.  If I find a good deal I pass it along...so sometimes a frame costs a bit more to produce and that is why prices may vary on similar size paintings.

"HATCHET" ORIGINAL OIL ON TEXTURED PANEL IN MY ETSY SHOP © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

This horse cracked me up...I LOVE the foreshortened view of his big ole pretty horse nose!  I had a funny name for him, but I know this horse...I've sat watching my beautiful niece Kaitlinn ride him...so it had to be HIS NAME this time!  And, I love his name anyway!  I plan to do a frame for him if he doesn't sell before that...I'm enjoying framing these!  "Hatchet" is still a bit tacky, so won't be available for a few days for shipping...but he'll be oxidized (did you know that oil paintings don't DRY per say...they oxidize) on or about April 14, 2014.

"SHADOW HORSES" ORIGINAL 4X4" OIL ON MINI FOR MY ETSY SHOP © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Shadow Horses"
4x4" oil on textured panel
$27 +2.95 shipping in US

Driving to Nebraska one day I saw in the distance these horses in a snowy field. I took my camera without looking and held it out to take a picture and caught this. These horses are eating in a grassy field, but I always get a little thrill when I catch something in an unusual way. "Shadow Horses" is painted on a 4x4" textured panel with black sides. They are ready for framing or to set on an easel. (remember a 4x4 frame will take a little from all sides) OR, for no extra charge I can mount "Shadow Horses" on a 5x5" black backer board so they can be framed with all sides showing. Just request the mounting when you order. The frame is not included, but you can find frames like this at Michaels. "Shadow Horses" will be ready to ship on August 2, 2013 when they are dry.

The weekend allowed me to sit down and paint a dark horse for my father's den as requested.  I find, when I paint on a textured canvas or panel it adds just that little extra movement and umph....at least for me.  I LOVE all the movement!

I'm starting to itch to do another aspen mixed media...I best get to it!
