Here we are at the end of my 101 Pet Portraits in 101 Days project.  I want to thank EVERYONE who participated in this project with me.  It was an honor to hear all the stories and get to know each and every beloved pet through painting them!  I learned a lot through this process.  The biggest and best thing for me is that I reaffirmed just how much I love color in my work...I do believe it will be a character in my work that I will hang on to!  I also just got a little better in some areas...not so concerned about tightness, but realized that working with simpler strokes in areas is possible and looks better to me.  I will continue to work with a mix of abstract and realism for the time being as I still find value in using both, so that has been strengthened.  THE INSPIRATION abounds after doing all these pet kids!  It leaks to my other subject matter, so on I go!  Next for me is SUMMER ART MARKET which is June 13-14 at 200 Grant in Denver.  Be watching for more information on that!

NOW!...On to Domino; my 101 of 101. Domino is a Dalmatian kid to my dear friend and co-grandma Diana Grimes.  Domino was the family kid actually, and quite a pet I hear; very much loved.  I find it fun that the 101 was a Dalmatian!  My friend Diana had the idea and I loved it from first mention!  Domino was a great fauvist experience even being "white"!  There is green and red and blue and purple and yellow all in this one "white" pet kid's portrait!  I used my honeycomb in this last portrait of this project to add a little interest to the background.

"Grizzley"

HA...THIS is Grizzley!  Isn't that an awesome name for this sweet little Pomeranian pup?  I got such a kick out of him! His pet dad is Casey Williams; but my friend Ron Hanson sent me his pic.  I found him interesting to paint.  I used the fauvist tradition and kept my colors bright.  In the photo he was on a blankee...I kept the colors basically the same, only toned down the dots as they would have taken away from this little guy in a painting.  Grizzley comes ready to frame or can sit on a small easel!  ps...I lightened his original photo so I could better see the detail within the dark colors...but you get the drift!

And here is Grizzley in his display suggestions...I'm sure there are as many as the imagination can come up with, but we can get an idea of how this little pup would look in different color frames...or in the easel; which I found at Hobby Lobby.

"Lola"

You know the song..."her name was Lola, she was a showgirl..."...YEP, that song played in my head the whole time I painted Lola!  I don't know her exact breed, but she could be a showgirl. lol...she was fun for that and...she was FUN to paint because of the colors...BUT NOT fun to photograph! HA.  SO MUCH COLOR in her...I LOVED this fauvist dog!  However, our weather is so poor I was forced to take photos indoors with artificial light.  I think it came out ok, but again, some of the things that show as blue have purple in them as well.  I only know to say that she looks just fine either blue or purple!  The background for Lola is a greyish blue, so that was another one that was difficult to photograph accurately. Such is life!  Michael Hofman sent me photo of Lola and immediately I saw all the color...she comes ready to frame or sit on an easel.

Lola's frame suggestions; as with all the others came from pictureframes.com.  They are floater frames, which means all the edges show.  The ptg is mounted from underneath.  This is a great type of frame for paintings that have subject matter that is very close to an edge...plus it is kind of modern.  Museums will have these frames along with the traditional ones.  The easel she is shown in I purchased at Hobby Lobby.

"Sweetie Pie"

"Sweetie Pie" is a precious little white German Shepherd pup.  There was so much opportunity to play with color and pattern with this little pup.  If I could GUESS, her background colors MAY be a little lighter than shown, but the effect of the contrast of strong color against the white fur of Sweetie Pie it's hard to tell.  I promise she does NOT look garish...just full of color and spirit!  As with some of my latest paintings that had some background pattern, I slipped a little in with Sweetie Pie.  I have TONS of different stamps, but for the moment I am enamored with the honeycomb pattern.  Sweetie pie is "sister" pup to Norma Newton who is giving her to her dad Norm and his wife Kathryn for his 80th birthday.  Is is a surprise...so...SHHHHH.  :)

Sweetie Pie is a darling girl in each of her display choices.  The easel was purchased at Hobby Lobby, and the floater frames were found through pictureframes.com.

"Bailey"

Bailey is my first horse in this project of 101 Pet Portraits in 101 Days.  I don't know much about Bailey, but the interesting thing about her was the composition; to make it ok to paint her in the 6"x6" format and keep it cohesive with the rest of the project.  I solved the problem in a fashion with pattern.  There is a larger negative space in this portrait than in most others, so I utilized pattern stamped into the background to "break up" the vastness of this negative space.  I very much liked the end result.  I have to say that the orangy color in the background is a bit darker than in this photo.  We have a very grey day and it affects the photos. sigh...I have decided, by this time in the project that it has has a profound effect on me...I will most likely continue to paint in the brighter color fashion that is the fauvist tradition.  As you will see in the reference photo there is a strong light on top of Bailey and I utilized that contrast, but added some awesome cerulean blue/turquoise in a very light value, contrasted with the burnt oranges, purples and reds in her coat.  White is white with a little blue and orange here and there.  All in all a great fun painting to do!  Bailey comes ready to frame or she can sit on an easel. 

I want to make mention again WHY I add texture to these paintings.  Well, the first answer is I absolutely LOVE texture, even implied (not actual, but it looks like it) texture.  I think it adds another dimension to the interesting"ness" of a painting, it also makes it clear it is original and not a print.  It is part of what makes me a mixed media painter.  I've loved the many aspects it affords other than JUST a painting...which is OK too...just not for me at this time in my career!

"Rory Gallagher"

Rory Gallagher is pet kid to Mary Logsdon.  Rory was skinny and howled for two weeks, like an Irish singer from the 70/s of the same name, thus he sort of named himself!  I love the strong colors in Rory and the great contrast!  White against just about anything, except maybe more white is a great one for contrast.  Rory's eyes are pumpkin colored, so a fauvist cat from the get go! I also added a turquoise blue to the background; which is opposite on the color wheel so the contrast there is also great! 

Rory is sister to Takoda, and is on hold for his pet mom who is traveling abroad. Check him out with his frame suggestions!

I think the turquoise color is pretty accurate here on my monitor...

"Kailai" is a beautiful chow/retriever mix pup that was rescued JUST IN TIME according to her pet mom Mary Ann Dany!  I see this face and am SO grateful to Mary Ann!  I hear she is quite a lady as she always sits with her legs crossed!  She loves Mary as she follows her around and listens to everything she has to say. 
I chose strong oranges and reds with just a bit of blue for balance in the fauvist way of working.  Remember a lady can be strong too! HA
