"SPRING TRIO" ORIGINAL PAPER CAST ASPEN PAINTING © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Spring Trio" is the second in my aspen paper cast series that I will be introducing at the SUMMER ART MARKET this June 11-12.  It was hard to get a fresh enough pic as our weather isn't cooperating...but, I used two colors with two different stamps on this one to simulate a little sky and foliage.  FUN!...
The shadow from the matt is only there because I've just set the frame and matt over the piece...just to give you an idea of the look with the framing...I'm off to do another piece...FUN DOINS!

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY ALL...WE HAD A SPECIAL VISITOR TO OUR HOUSE!

OK...so I WISH it were a vet we could have been honoring...Instead we were sitting at the table to dinner and as I took my plate to the kitchen I saw him/her...didn't have time to check...STANDING about 7' tall eating from our bird feeder...I RAN breakneck speed upstairs to grab my camera...and came down too late to shoot a pic standing...but I did get a couple or so...FIRST I tried to get the pic from inside...QUICKLY I realized that it just wasn't going to work and I've waited 8 YEARS to get a day time shot...so I hopped out to the front deck; some 15 feet away and got a few...

Momma or Pappa bear was busy munching the spilled sunflower seads...I could tell he/she didn't care if I was there as LONG as I stayed away from his/her ill gotten gain...Just look at this LOOK when I tried to get his/her attention to shoot the pic...YEP...was more interested in getting the pic than making him/her mad...tee hee...(crazy artist)
Don't you think this says..."Don't mess with me"...ha!  So, I stood out and snapped til he/she got tired, or ate all the seeds and slowly got up and left...sigh...exciting stuff...So, the REAL story is..."Will my husband put up the feeder AGAIN?"...stay tuned...:)

A DAY OF PLAY...SOME PICS TO SHARE!

It's always good to play away from the office...and that is JUST what we did yesterday...We packed an overnight bag and headed out of town.  Our first stop was the "Wildlife Sanctuary" just outside of Hudson Colorado.  For those of you who have never been there it is a place where rescued wild animals get a second chance at life.  I would imagine that the actual animals will vary from time to time depending on which ones were rescued...so, today we have for your viewing pleasure...LIONS, TIGERS, BEARS...and oh yes...some WOLVES!  I LOVE making mosaic collages...so I made one...and then I'm offering some individual shots...IT WAS FUN, and a great learning experience!
Oh, but first...there were beautiful Columbine flowers at the entrance...For those of you who are not Coloradians...they are our state flower...
This guy was rescued from a zoo in Nebraska...he has a bum foot, but still SO majestic!
Takin a nap in the shade
This is NOT my type of bear that we have up here...this is a grizzly!
Grizzly 2
"Lion" in the grass...get it...(laying...lion)...tee hee
I didn't see the second one in the hole til I got home and put these on the computer...FUN!...serendipitous!!
The only white tiger they had...
It was dinner time and these guys all came and hung out on the hill waiting and occasionally howling...it was cool and spooky at the same time!
You gotta love those colors!!
I called this "Relaxing in the tub"
My husband called this "TIGER SOUP"...HA...my favorite!

Then we headed up to Ft. Collins to check out the city for a possible move location.  I didn't take any pics there cuz it rained...but it was a good trip, and I've gotta say...I'M LOVIN FT. COLLINS!  More on that another day!!

Tomorrow it is back to working on paper cast aspen for the SUMMER ART MARKET...FUN!

I have been wanting to play with paper cast aspen for EVER!...FINALLY, I took the time to create a simple piece and put it under glass.  For those of you who have followed for awhile now you will know that I first made my mold, then poured my casts (shown naked in yesterday's post)...painted them and applied them to the support...which is canvas glued to a support and then covered with modeling paste and then painted and stamped on...FUN!
The finished piece shows like this...
Forgive the poor lighting...and the off skew...but you get the point...I have a couple more in my head before I let them loose in June...Stay tuned!!

"OSTRICH BABY" ORIGINAL OIL PORTRAIT OF BABY OSTRICH © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

The journey has been completed!..."Baby Ostrich" is the last in the series of baby animals for my grandson (due ON my BIRTHDAY this August 15!)!  I have had SO MUCH FUN doing these for the little boy I already love so much!  I have waited for days for some strong sun to photograph this little baby, but alas, had to settle for a bright sky instead.  But you get the idea.  As soon as the skies cooperate I'll photograph him again and put him with the others for PRINT SALES on my FINE ART AMERICA site.

I've enjoyed making collage mosaic's of these little ones and this one is my latest with all the paintings that will be hanging on his walls.
For the next few weeks I will be working hard to get ready for the SUMMER ART MARKET which will be June 11-12 at the ART STUDENT'S LEAGUE in Denver.  My booth is #6; which is near one of the ends near Sherman street (gotta take what you can get the first year or so)...so, if any of you are in the area I hope you will stop by!

"COLORADO LAYERS" CONTEMPORARY MIXED MEDIA COLORADO LANDSCAPE PAINTING © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Colorado Layers"
24" x 6" mixed media on 1 3/4" cradled panel
$325.00 includes shipping in the US
sides stained to compliment

So this was a LOT OF FUN!...Using Grant Woods as my artist inspiration (in that he just layers one hill on top of another with bright color) I started at the top with Mt. Evans...
I began to build my layers.  First I built up the mountain with molding paste...and painted my background; added a few bits of paper...and next was the middle...
I had fun putting in a bit of rock cliff as there are many around me...putting in some scrub oak (like ole Grant would have done) that are plentiful at the mouth of my canyon...WITH a few aspen peeking in there...which led me to the bottom...
which is reminiscant of "Golden Tops"...and seemed to be the perfect ending to my very FUN layers of the Colorado landscape that I LOVE!

I'm not finished with this long skinny layout...I have a Nebraska landscape in mind...and I'm sure another Colorado one to boot!

BEGINNINGS...AGAIN!! by SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

I've been looking inside myself lately...figuring what I wanted to do with some of my "long skinnies" as I call them...no...not another aspen SPECIFIC piece...something else...

On those days I look through all  my photos...I look at color...I look for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that inspires me...until I come up with an idea...

Of COURSE I absolutely LOVE my mountains, my trees, my beautiful landscapes...so that is a beginning for me...BUT WHAT ELSE she says...hmmm...

Well...one of my all time favorite artists is Grant Woods...for his landscapes...have you looked at his landscapes lately??  They are FUN...and colorful...so, he was my secondary inspiration for this play I have begun...

How to combine the subject I love with his flair for color and such...so this is my beginning...You may have to click on this to see the pencil drawing in that big ole white space...but if you don't have time...trust me it's there...I have Mt. Evans up top...well, below the sky...and then Mt. Evans...and then I am going to combine different scenes around me to bring all this together...

WHEW...at least that is the plan...as we know it could always turn into something else...but the PLAN is...thinking of Mr. Woods playfulness and his layering of hills and combining it with my mountains around here...I'm curious as to what will come out...FUN!

Even IN the house mom has oodles of garden...this big old sunflower was sitting on the dining room table...great for a painting I'd say!

So, while I was gone my wonderful husband took these paintings to the ARTIST'S CHOICE show here in Lakewood...it is a very hard show to get in to and I was excited to hear that all four I entered got in!  VERY RARE!...I'm pleased as punch, and I hope any in the area can pop over to see the show!

The story is the bloom of the Calla in this piece.  There was A LOT more leaf action in reality, but I wanted to keep it about the blooms.  I very much enjoy the stamps inter playing with the painted leaves. As I've been doing of late...the calla's and some leaves are painted in oil.

BEGINNINGS

As I do, I have begun two pieces at once.  I find working from one to another when my brain is tired is the best way to keep my creative flow.  I bought a purple Calla Lily over the weekend and was duly inspired...so a new pieces has begun.  With that usually comes some stamping, so I made a few Calla leaf stamps to add to the mix.  Next will come papers, and then the subject matter...as always...FUN!

As my grandson is coming sooner than later I feel a need to finish his little group of baby safari animals...and next on the list was a baby zebra...so, he has begun.  I suspect both will be finished in short order...

Saturday is my trip to see my parents, so I'm sure there will be photos from my mother's garden (she has been working hard to keep her blooms alive!) along with whatever else I find inspiring!

Friday night is the opening reception for the Artists of Colorado's first public brick and mortar show at the Brushstrokes Gallery in Denver.  For those of you in town, I invite you to hop over between 5 and 8 to say hi and see the beautiful work!
