I am still slipping in mountain summits for my project of the same name.  The name "Camelback Mountain" is  derived from its shape, which resembles the hump and head of a kneeling camel. You can find this mountain in Phoenix, AZ.  I like to add a frame suggestion for these fun paintings, and my favorite is a floater frame because it shows all the edges.  I get my floater frames on line from a company called pictureframes.com.  They offer a good selection of floater frames.

"Superstition Mountain" is part of the Superstition Mountains just east of Phoenix.  The mountain range is in the federally designated Superstition Wilderness Area.  The elevation in the more remote, eastern portion of the wilderness is higher than the western portion, which lowers temperatures slightly. Numerous hiking trails cross the mountains from multiple access points, including the Peralta Trailhead, the most popular. The Lost Dutchman State Park, located on the west side of Superstition Mountain, includes several short walking trails.  This is painted in oil on panel and is ready for framing or can sit on an easel or a shelf as is!  In this suggestion for frames I have placed it in a floater frame (not included).  I purchase my floater frames at pictureframes.com in their floater frame section.  The frame shown is CFS3.

I learned alot when I was researching this mountain.  I always knew it was one of the tallest, but didn't know it was THE tallest in North America!  I also didn't know it had been re-named it's original name of Denali.  It was originally named Denali by the Alaskan natives, and President Obama re-named it in 2015.  Denali means Great One.  And, it certainly is as it rises to 20,320 ft!  I've shown it here in a frame suggestion; a floater frame...one of my favorites.  You can find this frame at pictureframes.com.  

We had an unexpected fun day with our grandson Ethan and his daddy on Monday at the zoo...Love these grand babies! Love my hubby too!!  Ethan loves his "buppa" tons!  A great sunny day in Colorado which turned into snow the very next day!  AAAAHHH...springtime in the rockies! lol

The "Three Sisters" Faith, Hope and Charity are a complex volcano of three volcanic peaks of the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the Cascade Range in the state of Oregon. Each exceeding 10,000 feet in elevation, they are the third, fourth, and fifth highest peaks in the state of Oregon, and are located in the Three Sisters Wilderness about 10 miles south of the nearest town of Sisters.  "Three Sisters" is painted in oil on a 6"x6" panel and comes ready to frame or sit on an easel or even just perch on a shelf.  My favorite frame for this type of painting is a floater frame shown in the frame suggestion below (not included).  A floater frame is one where the painting sits such that all sides are showing.  I find my floater frames at pictureframes.com.

This is my first "requested " favorite peak/summit from my followers on facebook.  Anyone who wants to send a request to see their favorite peak/summit anywhere in the world is most welcome to do so.  You are not under any obligation to purchase it, I just want to amass a collection!  Of course IF you love it, I won't be sad, but that is not my main motivation!  Here I've shown the example I think would make for a great frame.  I just love these floater frames where you can see it all the way to the edge!

This fun aspen painting is a re-work that I was just never happy with. As you know, most artists that

have something on their wall will eventually find something that bugs them and work on it some more...that's why I always tell my collectors if you see something you like you best get it or I'll re-work it! lol...HOWEVER, I believe it usually makes it better...as in this case I think.  Below you see the original version.  It had lots of texture on the left side, but honestly, unless you were pretty close you didn't notice it...that always bugged me, so I added a bit of paper and a tad more oil with some texture pattern here and there and I believe it works so much better.  I'm laughing as the two colors of background are merely the way the light was when I photographed it. Let's see if I can describe the color...well, it is a lightish or tinted version of turquoise with a hint of ultramarine thrown in here and there as a mix...so, the one up top seems closest on MY monitor, but every monitor is different...perhaps a touch more greenish...so take my word for it...it works! lol

(loving texture as I do, I had been considering the wraps as affirmation sticks on their own, but this one just needed the color and texture...stay tuned for my affirmation sticks as stand alone pieces!)

 "Aspen Travels" is a first of a kind with the addition of the wrapped stick to add texture and color to this "slice" of a scene of an aspen stand.  There is a fun vertical texture added to this 20"x20" stretched canvas with the aspen taking up a portion of the top.  It's meant to be a "slice" of subject matter on the wonderful ever so slightly greyish white textured surface.  The aspen stand is acrylic, paper and oil. The colors in the wrap compliment the colors found in this slice of aspen life and add a great bit of texture to this painting.  The wrapped stick is attached securely so is a permanent addition to this assemblage painting.  Truly one of a kind.  A great way to own a larger canvas that is priced reflecting the color portions of this piece.

I've painted my view of Mt. Evans in every medium I've worked in, every style, so it only seemed fitting to paint it again with my current experimental way of working as I weave my way to artistic growth.  There was a base of acrylic put in that you can see here and there peeking through.  After that I started painting in oil.  I used a palette knife for a good portion of this painting.  I also worked with stamps and stencils to pull in pattern; which you can see most obviously in the sky, but if you look closely you can see the honeycomb pattern repeated; though more subtly in the foreground.  There is also a bit of paper throughout as well.  

 This detail image shows the paper peeking through as well as the honeycomb shape repeated

 The trees are applied almost intuitively...not much emphasis on realism; thus moving ever more close to my need for more abstract in my work.  The rocks are painted more with color as was the fashion of the fauves (wild beasts as they were called in the late 1800's and early 1900's)

I drive by a house near our C-470 quite often.  A house has sat near the highway for years.  One day the owner built a berm and put pine trees on top.  It looked so nice I had to stop and take a few photos; well, I didn't actually stop...I drove by with my camera facing the berm and snapped without looking! HA.  I was lucky I got a good enough shot to create "Five Pines"...I enjoy the buttery"ness" of the sky and the color in the foreground that implies movement.  A fun take on the pine!

 

It started out with sky in oil and paper in, well, paper...lol

 

I stained the sides a nice green that compliments the painting perfectly!

"Five Pines" is ready to hang, or, because of it's unique depth it can actually sit on a shelf or mantle!

A bit of new for me...no trees, no rocks...just barn and field with my papers added.  The idea for this painting came from a painting I saw not long ago in my husband's dental office...there were planes described with metals or color or something that made me decide to add texture in a very linear way.  The two sections under the barn have texture added with a modeling paste type material and painted in different colors to divide the space in an interesting way.  My intent was to create a simple barn on a simple plane.  From there came the color and visual texture with paper and stamps.

 

Since I painted it for a spot in my home, I added star stamps to compliment the star doors that it will hang next to as well as remind me of my Texas mom!  Note the bits of sky color I added in the foreground to bring a bit of unity.  The foreground is a multi layer bit of dry brush over color washes to bring some depth, and papers added for visual texture and interest.

I enjoyed painting this...The change for me was to think of the sky as merely a space that I wanted to bring added interest to.  I added papers; not to mimic clouds, but as a nod to the whimsical.  It makes me think of early drawings we did as children where we made visual lines to depict sky.  I am so happy with this first effort I think it will be a first in a series...FUN DOINS!

Mt. Wilson in Colorado is one of our hardest of the 14ers to climb.  Mt. Wilson is set about 10 miles from Telluride in the San Miguel Mountains.  I call these "long skinny" paintings my "layer" paintings as they are not part of a specific scene, but start with the subject matter at top and move down with different bits and pieces of things that are in and around the area.  These "long skinnies" are fun to weave things in as I move down the panel, imagining the feelings of standing within the scene and painting to highlight the joy of the moment!  "The Red Barn" is painted on MDF panel with cradled sides stained to compliment.  I use a water based stain on my cradles so if anyone would rather paint their sides it is an easy application!

I was asked to present a demo for another local art guild on my paper casting process.  It was a great opportunity to experiment with my casts a little more to see what else can be done with them...I've come up with a couple new things...stay tuned to the end result of those!  My goal was to incorporate the casts in fine art as well as crafts.  Remember that experimenting gives an artist great opportunity for growth! If you are in town and want to see the process it will be October 10 at 7 p.m. at the Rox Bar and Grille upstairs.  The Rox is just east of C-470 on Ken Caryl!

This is what I'm calling a Shabby Chic painting. I attached canvas to the gallery wrap canvas...I added brads here and there...and then painted right on top...In this work I still work with my subject matter but work accordingly. I encourage you to enlarge this piece so you can see the areas where I'm calling "shabby" or check out the detail photos below...just a new way to play! This work is comprised of bits and pieces of Colorado landscape scenery all put together in one cohesive piece! This mixed media piece has acrylic, modeling paste for added texture, oil (for most of the bottom of the painting), brads, and acid free paper. FOR THE HOLIDAYS I'M PUTTING THIS IN MY STUDIO SALE...SO FOR THIS PERIOD OF TIME IT WILL BE AT A GREATLY REDUCED PRICE!!

My answer is three fold...Number ONE, I want to be respectful of those, like me who have been hit with the economy and give gift choices that are affordable!  AND TWO, I am becoming dismayed at how our world is sometimes making art that seems only the rich can afford...that BUGS ME...I LOVE the process of my art...I have FUN painting...but I never want to be too big for my britches...:)  and THIRD...well, I need to clear out my studio to make room for MORE PROCESS, MORE PAINTINGS...FUN, FUN, FUN!!

"Golf in the Rockies"

I'm really laughing about this painting.  It was done at the request of the Deer Creek Golf Club in Littleton...well, they requested of the Ken Caryl Art Guild to do golf themed paintings and so we decided to do it at least once.  This painting started out with sand traps and such but I HATED all those sand colored blobs in there, so after I kept changing it it turned into a landscape with a single flag and golf hole...that's all I could bear to put in there!! HA...So, I guess this will be my only golf themed painting...Not a fan of the subject matter...HOWEVER I was a fan of playing with acrylics in little bottles with line tips...you'll have to click on it to see the detail...THAT was fun!!

I'm also laughing about the frame I got...It is not my typical metal frame...it is a wood frame I got at Hobby Lobby...Well, when I got it home I hated the color, so started sanding and painting and currently it is a MESS...so, I will play some more and come up with a solution that I like better...AAAHHH life!!  All in all...FUN DOINS!!

BEGINNINGS...AGAIN!! by SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

I've been looking inside myself lately...figuring what I wanted to do with some of my "long skinnies" as I call them...no...not another aspen SPECIFIC piece...something else...

On those days I look through all  my photos...I look at color...I look for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that inspires me...until I come up with an idea...

Of COURSE I absolutely LOVE my mountains, my trees, my beautiful landscapes...so that is a beginning for me...BUT WHAT ELSE she says...hmmm...

Well...one of my all time favorite artists is Grant Woods...for his landscapes...have you looked at his landscapes lately??  They are FUN...and colorful...so, he was my secondary inspiration for this play I have begun...

How to combine the subject I love with his flair for color and such...so this is my beginning...You may have to click on this to see the pencil drawing in that big ole white space...but if you don't have time...trust me it's there...I have Mt. Evans up top...well, below the sky...and then Mt. Evans...and then I am going to combine different scenes around me to bring all this together...

WHEW...at least that is the plan...as we know it could always turn into something else...but the PLAN is...thinking of Mr. Woods playfulness and his layering of hills and combining it with my mountains around here...I'm curious as to what will come out...FUN!

Loose Ends, Closets and Floors

After a wonderful Mother's Day weekend where I got to hear from BOTH my children, talk to my mother and go hiking with my wonderful husband it's time to tie up loose ends, and do some cleaning and organizing!  I've been avoiding all those little details we have in life in lieu of working on paintings, collage, and paper casts...It was a beautiful time, but I've gotta finish the backs, paint and stain, vacuum closets and decide what materials I can do without to make room for more of the media I work in more often...WHEW...this may take a couple of days!!

So, no new painting today...but a few fun pics of our hike in the foothills yesterday.  We live not far from the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater near Morrison Colorado...and although we didn't hike in that area there were a few red rocks here and there which always amaze me as they look like they just got squeezed upwards...but only made it to the slant...Interesting!

The hills and foothills from our hike were so interesting...more pinion pines than the ones near our house...which always remind me of the landscapes of Grant Woods. And, yes...we did run in to some evidence of animals...mountain lion tracks (though not a big one)...and a ton of bear fur!  I guess he just came down and rolled around on the ground to get rid of his winter coat??  I don't know, but it was a bit creepy!

I'm investing in a table saw so I can make my own cradles for my MDF panel collages and paintings...So that is on the list for pick up today as well...I made a cradle  (well, my husband did the sawing) by hand yesterday for the Aspen Lights and Shadows collage and it turned out beautifully, but took way too long and I couldn't saw the wood by hand myself...thus the need for the electric version of my hubby!  He is always so good to make what I need, but I feel bad for him knowing the number of cradles I will be making this summer...so off to Home Depot for me! FUN...a new tool!!
