For a fun "Long Skinny" as I call them, this slice of pine tree is painted on a cradled panel that is stained green on the sides.  I adore how the depth of these paintings can allow for sitting on a shelf OR hanging.  I have included a wire on back.  The background actually started out as another painting, so there are things back there that were original to another work that I didn't really enjoy.  Then I put some paper over it, acid free of course...a bit of texture and then the tree is in oil.  A great conversation piece for sure!

I like to draw many of my subject matter with charcoal so I can smudge it out if I don't like the placement of a thing...

As you can see the sides are a green stain that compliment the tree branches and bring unity.

The end result is a fun long skinny that fits in just about any small space that needs a little pizazz!

"Pine Trio"

 "Pine Trio" is a personal tribute I felt a need to complete.  Recently some beautiful pines were lopped off at the top across from our home here in the mountains.  It was for a view I understand.  Being a tree lover, this really made me angry and sad all at once!  I felt there were other options for this person who wanted a view.  It isn't my property, so there was nothing to say after it had been done.  SO, I painted these trees as a reminder that there is always a way...perhaps if the person had just pruned them the view would have been there and the trees might have survived this fate that has left them looking so destroyed!  I've seen these trees with this type of foliage up high, near tree line here in Colorado...beautiful things they are!  "Pine Trio" is painted in oil over an acrylic under painting with my paper stream winding behind and next to them.  I add these papers for interest, a bit of color, pattern and even a bit of texture.  The unique depth of this painting allows it to sit on a shelf or mantle, or can be hung from the wires on back.  The sides have been stained an ebony which compliments the painting!

Just Like the Aspen Tree...

There are times when I just want to PLAY with color and a phrase.  I found the phrase attached to this illustration in a blog written by Gail Lynne Goodwin.  If you did not know, aspen trees share common roots...when one is in trouble, the strength comes from those around...

I actually played with ink and sharpie on this fun little stand of aspen.

Continuing with my illustration type color and phrase I painted these fun acorns with acrylic; stamping the background a bit with design and adding the canvas and words to complete my vision of this fun little piece.  Also under glass with the black wood frame.

The phrase comes from the acornstash.com.  It reminds us just how important our dreams are!

I encourage you to veer from your regular way of working from time to time.  It is a great way to get your creative juices flowing.  From these fun projects I did for Luna's Mandala in Conifer were a great jumping off point for paintings and projects to come!  I've long loved adding words in the body of my work to add to the impact it may have on the viewer...so I now have new ideas for other things!  Let yourself stretch and play from time to time!  You'll be glad you did!

I have a special love for this painting as it went through quite a few birth pangs in it's process.  As I have said before to new artists and as a reminder to seasoned artists that we should never let fear or attachment to a painting stop us from wiping it clean if necessary to get to a desired result.  It is a common issue with beginning artists for sure, and some seasoned ones as well to keep working a painting practically to death because we may not want to start over, or give up on a painting we have gotten attached to.  The best advice I can give is to just wipe off and start again, or sand it down if it is dry, or even paint over it or tear it up!  See the value in lessons learned in a painting that is not going as you would have wanted...I have found that at times when I have completely sanded down a completed painting that wasn't making me happy that there were hidden gems in the bits left behind...which increased my creative thought and the end result from these experiences is often a painting I LOVE!

I began by laying in a base background and paper for this painting as you can see below.

TIP: **If you ever get stumped as to a color scheme a favorite method for me is to look at magazines until I find a photo of anything that has a color scheme that appeals to me...you can also find it in LIFE...but the photos are a fun way to immediately filter out all the middle colors that may make a color scheme a little too much. 

I stamped a bit on this beginning phase to get a little implied texture.  I don't worry at this stage if the stamps are covered over...it is an inspirational tool I use to get my creative juices flowing... Next was to add my aspen.  I use acid free paper to define this step.  It isn't necessary, but a good way for me to visualize before committing to a composition as I can move the papers around until I have a pleasing end result for composition.

It is after this stage that I began to lay in my lines and such on the trees...I was fine there, but when I started with the foliage I changed my mind 3 times which meant I wiped a good bit off and started over!  This is frustrating at times, but the end result is fun as some of the paint stayed behind making a FUN bit of this or that for the final result!  I used more painterly strokes for the trees, I stamped the leaves with my hexagon stencil and then defined them in areas with charcoal.  THIS step is very exciting to me...to play with lots of different media to affect the end result I was looking for.  Below you can see a little detail in my process. I learned in my painful birth pains on this one that less was more in the leaves...BELIEVE me I had much more in a couple different methods and I was not happy with it!

I settled on the soft colors within the leaves that highlights the beginning of spring...and if you look closely you can see the definition I added with line in some areas.  The end result was a fun and soft aspen stand that made me quite happy I wiped this painting until I reached the goal I had in mind! I then stained the sides of my cradle to compliment the piece and it was finished!  A long birthing process for this painting, but well worth it when I can smile at the end result!

This fun aspen painting is a re-work that I was just never happy with. As you know, most artists that

have something on their wall will eventually find something that bugs them and work on it some more...that's why I always tell my collectors if you see something you like you best get it or I'll re-work it! lol...HOWEVER, I believe it usually makes it better...as in this case I think.  Below you see the original version.  It had lots of texture on the left side, but honestly, unless you were pretty close you didn't notice it...that always bugged me, so I added a bit of paper and a tad more oil with some texture pattern here and there and I believe it works so much better.  I'm laughing as the two colors of background are merely the way the light was when I photographed it. Let's see if I can describe the color...well, it is a lightish or tinted version of turquoise with a hint of ultramarine thrown in here and there as a mix...so, the one up top seems closest on MY monitor, but every monitor is different...perhaps a touch more greenish...so take my word for it...it works! lol

"Five Pines"

As I often do when a work stays home with me for awhile, I've reworked it a little.  It is the hazard or blessing that belongs to the creator of the work I suppose!  I like this MUCH better!  I was always bothered a little by the colors I chose for the sky, and I felt the body of the work needed a little brightening.  This all falls in line with my working with brighter colors and using a bit more pattern

or texture.  You will see that the sky is now a beautiful turquoisy blue with some bit of pattern throughout.  I brought the color of the sky down into the land a bit and repeated texture here and there for added interest and a unifying touch.  I also removed the garish looking yellow that bugged me too and toned it down a bit while keeping it light. 

 

previous version...this photo makes the sky color look two toned, in reality it was all more the blue to the left and the foreground was a little dark...just didn't appeal to me.  I also added a few highlights to the trees. 

It's ok if you were attached to the earlier version (though that no longer exists), but for my growth as an artist I need that brighter color with more texture!

Aspen Plant Stands

Headed to AAR RIVER GALLERY in Westminster

These two plant stands, that I have aptly named "Aspen Stands" are on their way to the Aar River Gallery in Westminster, CO.  If you have not been there it is owned by my friend Becky Silver, and it is a WONDERFUL gallery!  Her space is beautiful and houses much quality artwork as well as jewelry, and other great artsy things.  If you have not visited I encourage you to do so!

Each stand is 29" tall and the tops are 12"x12".  They are a perfect size for just about any spot in the house!  I sketched the trees in and then loosely gave each a shaded size with similar color to the top and then stamped the aspen leaves with my own stamp design with a bit of loose color inside.  I love the sketchy look in this piece! FUN!

Another larger piece that reflects my growth in the direction of color and a bit more abstract.  I'm really enjoying working in this new way.  The background is acrylic in base with a bit of the honeycomb pattern subtly added.  The rest is oil.  Note how you can see a bit of paper and pattern reflected in the rocks...a hail to my earlier work.  Most of this painting was created with palette knife.  FUN DOINS!

This abstracted landscape is purely from my heart. I have yet to actually see this in life, though I would never discount that it exists. "Blue Rock Cliffs" is inspired by my many walks up in the Colorado mountains where I see boulder fields and cliffs. For the adventurous soul that dreams of colors and trees in colors that sing. You can purchase this painting as is and set it on a small easel, or you can frame it in your favorite 4x4" frame (keep in mind that 1/2" is taken on the sides when framing), for .50 more I can mount it on either a black or off white 5x5" backer board so you can frame it in a 5x5" frame. NOTE: I carry some recycled frames in my ETSY shop, so take a look.

"The Life of Pine"

The circle of life is not only a symbol in this painting, but it describes the life of a tree perfectly!  Not only does it go through seasons of life, but it's very trunk, when cut in slices describes the rings that mirror the symbol on the painting!  So, the perfect name for this slice of tree could only be "The Life of Pine".

Painted on MDF panel with texture and paper added, this tree has texture of it's own along with bits of green that give it the color of life!  The color near the top symbolizes the sun; the very thing that helps this beauty to grow strong! The background and trunk are mostly acrylic, with the leaves and a bit of detail here and there are in oil.

"The Life of Pine" is stained green on it's sides to compliment.  Ready to hang or sit on a shelf!

Last week I went to San Antonio, TX to see my brother and sister in law while my wonderful hubby attended a conference for work.  I absolutely adore my family, and we got to spend some FUN quality time together.  I stayed with them a couple of days in New Braunfels and then we all went up to San Antonio where I remained and played on the river walk and some other things.  My brother is a very elusive creature; it is HARD to get him to agree to sit for a photo...this one wasn't the best quality due to lighting thus the photo shop activity, but I adore him...my brother and I!!

The other important thing I got to do while in San Antonio was to see my father's resting place.  It is the first time I had visited, so it was a little special...a little out of body...but, I had to capture the beauty of our military resting spot for our brave men and women at Ft. Sam Houston...Dad's spot is front and center...just like in my heart!

In life I always hugged my father...he was SO tall,  but you'd often see photos of tall him and very short me...so, it seemed only natural for me to hug my dad again...Love you My Dad!!

 

I'm VERY busy these days painting as much as I can for SUMMER ART MARKET this June 7-8 at Art Student's League on 2nd and Grant...stay tuned for more info...but for now...MY BOOTH SPACE IS # 167!!

We just returned from my mother's house in Oklahoma City for a 5 day visit.  I have to say it was quite an experience!  We drove to our airport on the day of a below zero cold snap.  It took over 2 1/2 hours to get there...flew to OK City...landed in a major snow and ice event for them!  We passed cars that had spun out and even turned over...a scary beginning, but that wasn't the end of it...OH NO...during that time it was SO cold and ICY that we were unable to get out save one partial day.  Our power went out, and while I was on the phone reporting the outage there was a 4.5 earthquake! I'd never felt one before, so it was a bit disconcerting.  And, to top it off I was sick the whole visit! WOWIE!  I forgot my camera, so tried to limp along with the camera in my ipad...HOWEVER, since the IO7 update I haven't been able to transfer photos from it to my computer...don't ya just love those updates!! :)  SO, I'm leaving you today with just the visuals of the trip I "painted" for you in words!

I drive by a house near our C-470 quite often.  A house has sat near the highway for years.  One day the owner built a berm and put pine trees on top.  It looked so nice I had to stop and take a few photos; well, I didn't actually stop...I drove by with my camera facing the berm and snapped without looking! HA.  I was lucky I got a good enough shot to create "Five Pines"...I enjoy the buttery"ness" of the sky and the color in the foreground that implies movement.  A fun take on the pine!

 

It started out with sky in oil and paper in, well, paper...lol

 

I stained the sides a nice green that compliments the painting perfectly!

"Five Pines" is ready to hang, or, because of it's unique depth it can actually sit on a shelf or mantle!

Art Students League 2nd and Grant in Denver, CO

 

This is my new toy...something I wanted to experiment with to see if it would work. The best way to explain it is a painted sculpture..."ish".  I took a 6' 4" square pvc fence post and learned how to make it accept acrylic paint...figured out how to make it stand up and WHEW...here it is.

 

I KNEW it was not going to photograph well because it is so TALL and SKINNY...so I've taken a few detail shots so you can see it up close. The base is a wood plaque screwed into a 2' length of 4x4 that the pvc pipe slides over.  I wanted to keep the base as unobtrusive as possible, so this is what I came up with.  My wonderful husband and I are also working on a system that would allow this to be placed in a garden if that were preferred.  I've talked to some paint experts that gave me the proper sealant that will work outside.  The top is a fence post top that was painted to compliment this aspen stand of a pole.

In this large detail of a section of the top you can see how I've painted trees all around...this one sports a tree wrapping the edge.

I worked to make interesting negative spaces with some branches...adding to interest.

To really get the feel of this piece you just have to see it...so, I hope to see you at SAM in a couple of weeks!!

 

 

The weekend was a pleasant one...digging in the yard, me painting, a Memorial Day picnic with church folks...even a visit with our elk family in the meadow at the entrance to our mountain "neighborhood".



 

I'm hoping to get one more art pole completed before SAM.  This one will be poppy related I think...but first...another layer painting...and on I go!
