"PEAR"LY" FORMAL" ORIGINAL OIL MINI ON PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

4"x4" oil on panel
$25 + $2 shipping in US
Available in my ETSY shop

This is actually a re-paint of one I didn't even post.  It began in the traditional way with the dark background as with some other etsy fruit paintings, but the pear looked kind of shriveled...NOT an apetizing thing to have on your walls, SO, I re-worked him, sat him up all straight and tall like a proud little pear...and then couldn't resist adding a bit of stamp to blend color from pear to background, background to pear...I like it MUCH better now...and this little pear has had SO much attention he is even blushing!
As has been my pattern...he is painted black on the sides and can be mounted at no extra charge on a black backer board to frame him in a 5"x5" frame...either way...he is pear"ly" ready for you!!

AND...I finally settled on a stain color for "Subtle Passage of Crows"...I went with an English Oak; rapidly becoming my favorite...it is a nice contrast with the star of the show!

I say back to the easel for ME!

HAPPY CREATING!!

"DUCK PATROL" ORIGINAL OIL ON TEXTURED PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

watching over any spot you wish this 4"x4" over textured panel
can only be purchased through my ETSY shop.
$25 plus $2 shipping in the US

Today I just felt like a sense of humor was needed!  It was a busy weekend, I am tired, so the chuckle I had while painting this duck was just the ticket! I used a pumice for the dirt he was standing in over a slightly textured panel.

As always, the sides are painted black and he can be purchased as is to frame as you choose, or mounted on a black backer board for framing with all the sides showing in a 5"x5" frame.  I have found great frames at Hobby Lobby, or Michaels.

I have been asked why I like to paint on textured panels.  Well, I enjoy texture for sure...so that's one reason, but also...it adds to the originality of the piece.  I've also been asked why I sign my paintings LANE instead of Galloway...and the answer is because Lane was how I've signed for years...so, to keep the continuity of my signature I decided to keep it that way...besides...Lane is now my middle name, so it's all good!!

"RUFFLED FEATHERS" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA ON 4X4" PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Ruffled Feathers"
4"x4" mixed media on panel
SOLD in my ETSY shop!

I had to paint another crow as a companion to "Crow" and this guy was it.  I know the two backgrounds are not photographed equally...the first one was a little bright in the photo, but they were painted side by side, so they do go together nicely.  Or, they stand alone just fine also!  As I've been doing, I added black to the sides so it can sit on an easel alone, or I have also added (at no extra cost) a black acid free/lightfast backer board that is 5x5" so, when mounted the painting "floats" free of edges being cut off.

HAPPY CREATING!!

"CROW" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA 4X4" MINI ON PANEL OF CROW © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Crow"
4"x4" mixed media mini on panel
$25 plus $2 shipping in US
available in my ETSY store

This is a little back to my love of mixed media with this little painting...I enjoyed branching out to add a little more to my ETSY store...As the others are, his sides are painted black...the background is acrylic and paper and the crow and branch is oil.  I absoluely LOVE mixing my media!

As I stated in my piece "Subtle Passage of Crows" the Native Americans look upon the crow as a symbol for keeping the law. While the spiral you can see in the background is a symbol for balance, progress, direction, development. Put the two together and it makes a strong statement for strength!

As I do with my other Etsy paintings I offer "Crow" with a black backer board for no extra charge...this is great for wanting to frame him with all the edges showing...the full monty I guess you'd call it...:) I've painted a companion piece to "Crow" that I will post tomorrow...so, stay tuned!

I'm in the mood for getting my sander out and grinding down some surfaces...Two are the abstracts I started in the workshop, and one is a finished painting that has been grating on me of late...check back to see what happens...good or...well, not so good; which I call "lesson learned"...

"GOOSE" ORIGINAL MINI OIL ON PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Goose"
4" x 4" oil on panel
SOLD...thank you Milinda!!
available in my ETSY store

I'm still working up my little mini's in moments here and there.  I get a kick out of painting what ever comes to mind! As I've been doing I paint the edges of the panel black.  They work wonderfully when mounted with acid free tape to black acid free/lightfast board in 5x5" size so it can "float" in a black frame.

Today I'm playing with abstract background and painting a crow! FUN DOINS!!
Note the paper and stamping! :)

Over the weekend we decided to hike up in the mountains above our house.  I've been thinking about the coming snow...ouch...a bad word for me right now...so we decided to get up there and enjoy before we couldn't...:)

Oak Leaves are so pretty when they begin to change!

My husband was so excited that he could see downtown Denver from the top...He said I was just in there to pretty it up...nice hubby!
I found this rock fascinating! Couldn't decide if it was a fist or what! FUN!

Couldn't resist playing with this photo...it was dark green against a darkish sky, so...FUN!  This is a good reminder that you can always paint something in a different color than it really is!  TRY IT SOMETIME!  It is so freeing! (is that a word??) :)

And, last but not least is an owl...NO...it's a stump with moss on it...but doesn't it look like an owl??
MORE FUN DOINS!!

HAPPY CREATING!

"SUBTLE PASSAGE OF CROWS" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA ON CRADLED PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Subtle Passage of Crows"
12" x 3" mixed media on cradled panel
$72 plus $10 shipping in the US

After the workshop I decided to add birds to this piece instead of my signature trees.  It just felt right, and being the artist I got to choose! Isn't life grand! Such a large name for such a small work, but it fits! Thanks Joan for naming it!  I took this piece to a critique night for one of the art guilds I'm a member of; Ken Caryl Art Guild and we discussed several ways to finish this little, but powerful painting.  I took their advice and added a couple crows in the background in flight...as if they were making their passage to their destination.

The crow is often thought of as a sign of impending death or vampires...but did you know that the Native Americans believe the crow is a symbol for keeping the law. I found this interesting, and it fits my life...Little Saundra always doing what is right...following the laws of the land in respect for those who came before who made them for our good as a country.

The spirals you see here have a great balance of meaning for this painting.  They are often seen as symbols for Balance, Progress, Direction, Initiation, Centering, Expanding, Awareness, Connection, Journeying, Development. WOW...a whole lot of meaning for one little painting...but it works!

I've added my papers and stamping in the background in the abstract as I do for the viewer to interject meaning or visual as they see fit.  I was fascinated to hear from my fellow artists the other night...some saw a village at the bottom, one saw a couch in front of a window.  I LOVE IT!

My only question left to answer is how to treat the sides.  I could stain them...I could paint them...that will be the final piece to this painting.  As soon as that decision is made it goes into the website!  HOWEVER...a unique opportunity for anyone who is struck with this painting...to tell me how you want it finished if you decided to purchase it right here and now!! WOO HOO!

I have a brown stain, an Oak colored stain...any paint color you could imagine...even a green stain...FUN!

HAPPY CREATING!

WORKSHOP FUN, NEW IDEAS!

A BEGINNING...
The past two days I attended an abstract workshop (at the Madden Museum in Fiddler's Green where our current CWS New Trends show is hanging) given by Joan Fullerton; a wonderful artist who lives in Parker, CO.  As you know if you've followed me for long I have begun to be interested in stretching my artistic muscles and play with abstract.  I still LOVE working with touches of realism, but I find the concept of abstract challenging and would be a great way for me to grow as an artist.

If you click the link to Joan's website you will see right away with her beautiful piece "Singing Solo" WHY I was interested in taking her workshop! She has a beautiful way of marrying those things we see and put our own story to with touches of recognizable subject matter...and a TREE to boot! RIGHT UP MY ALLEY!

In Joan's workshop she began with sampler boards on 140 lb watercolor paper...these samplers were fun ways to think in the abstract, using materials such as Venetian Plaster, gesso, acrylic medium, paper, foil...you name it...!  Below are examples of some of my favorite samples.
This sample was using venetian plaster and pain on top...FUN!

This was brown paper uing venetian plaster and a stencil with paint on top...

Can you see a theme here...this was actually custom patch; which I use in my work currently, a tree stencil with paint on top...and on the left you can see some play with cheesecloth and glitter and paint...above a stencil with gel medium and painted over...and I believe that little swirl was a stamp INTO venetian plaster...FUN DOINS!
I like custom patch for a lot of my texture work, but the thing that is unique about venetian plaster is the cracking that often happens...it isn't as flexible as custom patch, but the cracking is FUN when you want a little something extra!!
An example (a little blurry, sorry Joan) of Joan's work included a crow...During our workshop we talked about icons or images that spoke to us in some way.  I have always loved trees...to me they mean strength and peace; they reflect humans in my mind as they live lives and their scars often show...BUT, as I began to work in trees to my starts for paintings I couldn't stop thinking about birds...as hard as I tried to make it just about trees...birds were always there in my mind...to me they mean freedom and growth...which is PERFECT for where I am in life right now...so I suspect birds will be an icon for me for awhile...stay tuned....I am thinking a bird will be interjected into the piece I began at the top of this post! :)

Another thing Joan adds to her work is a lot of "junk" or "ephemera" as she interchanged defining in her demos.  These pieces I believe house a piece of railroad I think and other various items she may have picked up here and there...but you can see how she blends.
So, armed with some new and some reminder information I began to just slap things down with a composition of sorts in mind...something we talked about at the beginning of day two.  Below are my "starts"...and some detail that is exciting...and then I decide what I will incorporate...check out below!

OK...so you can obviously see some tree trunks in there...and some dark streaming through the piece...BUT, as I woke this morining I feel I may have to add birds in some way...so stay tuned...ONE OF THESE DAYS I will get back to it!!  Hopefully SOON!

This is a detail of the above painting...I absolutely LOVE the texture and color that is peeking from behind...If you look closely you can also see foil that will be sanded down and color added as I go along...
Here you can see some of the drawing that was covered over, a little piece of book, lots of texture and color peeking through...EXCITING!!
This is a second painting start...again...you see trees and tons of texture...but, this bird thing definately is speaking to me...so, I'm curious as to what comes out of this two days of inspiration!
As you can see we were all busy working and playing amidst the beautiful setting at the Madden Museum...At the back you can even see my friend Susan Gordon's abstract in the middle that won an award at this show!!  Way to go Susan!!

So, I am armed with information, inspiration and some beginnings...it's now up to me to get going!!
