"SUNFLOWER IN SEASON" OIL ON MIXED MEDIA CRADLED PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE FINE ART

What can I say, it was just TIME to do another sunflower.  The days have been warm of late, and that always makes me think of sunflowers, so, it had to be done!  This bloom is on an 18"x18" cradled MDF panel with stained sides to compliment.  I'm thinking acorns and cherries coming soon!

"MOUNTAIN SUNFLOWER" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE WITH SUNFLOWER © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

Though the subject matter is this mountain sunflower, the landscape behind gives you the beauty of it's surroundings!  "Mountain Sunflower" is painted in oil over acrylic and acid free paper with a bit of texture in the mountains and foreground.   Painted on a cradled panel with stained sides, this piece of mountain beauty is ready to hang, or, it's unique depth will allow for sitting on a shelf!  "Mountain Sunflower" will be ready for shipping on or about March 14, 2014 when it is fully dry.  Oranges and Yellows tend to be the slowest drying; or more accurately, oxidizing, so shipping is a bit further out than most others with different colors.
detail

This painting was fun, but a challenge.  I enjoy VERY MUCH putting in the abstract qualities that I do; using paper and texture and paint to weave in something that reads; in THIS case as landscape, but also works as abstract!  I used texture in the mountains and in the foreground in spots, and painted in the sunflower with oil.  The end result is fun, but sometimes there is a bit of reworking and removing of parts that don't work well, and that can be a bit of a challenge.  My motto is NEVER BE AFRAID to eliminate what isn't working...if it is the ENTIRE painting, there are lessons learned, but don't keep something just because it took some time to do!

Last week I sold Baby G...the collector got to choose the frame color.  In this case it was the soft white that was a part of the giraffe baby background color.  I think she made a good choice!!

"SIX RED POPPIES" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA ON CRADLED PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

24"x24" mixed media on cradled panel
$700
Red poppies will brighten any room! Summer is always in our hearts and a happy thing to grace your walls!  Painted in acrylic, acid free paper, and oil this cradled piece is ready to hang!  Stained on the sides to compliment.

This is a bright and happy painting that I hated at first because there was a bigger poppy among the others...Take a look at a poppy field...they are the same size...remember never to be afraid of wiping out...and re-working something that isn't working.  The best tip I have for someone who is not too happy with a painting...walk away and come back later...often you will see the offending section right away!

HAPPY CREATING!

"POPPY CONVERSATIONS" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA POPPY PAINTING © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Poppy Conversations"
18" x 48" mixed media on cradled panel
Available, for now, only on my WEBSITE

I had a ball painting this piece! It is one of those rare pieces where it came out mostly like I had in my head when I did my first sketch after the dream that LED to the sketch! YAY! I will be changing out the photo the first chance I get with a sunny day...but unfortunately we are in for cloudy weather for the next three days and I didn't want to wait that long!  HOWEVER, the color representation is fairly accurate on MY monitor anyway! YAY again!

On this painting I focused on the abstract qualities of the background a good little bit...I had in mind composition and balance before I even put the flowers in.  I spent a little time even on their stems...they are little works of art all on their own...I wish I could show it as it looks here in my studio!

There is acrylic, paper, modeling paste for texture (well, custom patch acting as modeling paste), and the poppies are oil in this painting.  YES, you can paint oil over acrylic...:)  I got to use some of my favorite new "brushes" in this painting. They are made of a pliable rubber that is impervious to heat and solvents, and the paint just wipes right off or peels off if it dries on...I've used them in my oils and acrylics, and they would also work great to create pattern with your watercolors! They are Catalyst by Princeton. I found mine at Meiningers here in Denver. They have a long handle...just perfect for any type of artwork!

Soon I will be taking Poppy Conversations to my gallery in Louisville; Creations Art and Gifts Fine Art , but for now it lives in my studio. Later this summer it will travel with me to the SUMMER ART MARKET, where I will be in BOOTH #38...I hope to see you there!! June 8 and 9 at the Art Students League in Denver...Stay tuned for more information!

until then...HAPPY CREATING!!

"POPPIES THREE" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA PAINTING OF ICELAND POPPIES" © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY; EXPERIMENTS; REFERENCES FOR YOU

"Poppies Three"
12" x 12" mixed media on cradled MDF with English Oak stained sides
$300 includes shipping in the US

THIS is for the Daily Paintworks site...YES, it worked the last post...now to add to my on line gallery...:) NOW...for the REFERENCES and the EXPERIMENT!!

The past few days we have had TONS of Robins hanging out in our pines that have the blue berries...they are going crazy!!  I learned a bunch of Robins is called a "ROUND"...FUN TO LEARN NEW STUFF!!  They flit here and there SO fast I felt lucky to get this pic of a sweet little guy!!  Below is a collage I made of some of my favorite bird pics...
You can also see these pinned to my PINTEREST site that you can either access by following the link or click on the PINTEREST on my sidebar...

The experiment I am working on will be a series I'm going to call my "Shabby Chic" series (IF it works out that is...)...I woke up wanting to play some, and had the idea to add canvas to canvas...mostly for more texture...but also to see what I do with it...the beginning is below....24" x 18" gallery wrap canvas...
Not too pretty is it...HA...nope...but, in my head it may go some places...I'm still going to do my "thing" on it...but I am also thinking of it as a tippy toe into abstract...for later on when I may want to push a little bit on my old creative brain.

I HATE to have white canvas...so I rolled some color over the whole thing to get it started...
As I work quickly, and often on two or three things at once I've already sketched a bit of mountain at top with vine charcoal...REMEMBER...Shabby Chic...gotta be excited with every stray string, every smudge...etc, etc...Hopefully I'll have a large block of time tomorrow to do MORE!!

Til then...more reference photos for your pleasure...also on my PINTEREST boards I believe if you like...
gotta LOVE this fatty!!
These are my favorite ocean birds I snapped when visiting my son in Ocean Beach; San Diego...some of them have been painted already...
This cutie just made me laugh...hope it gives you a little tug at the corners of your mouth too...
HAPPY CREATING!!

"ORCHIDS" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA PAINTING OF ORCHIDS © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Orchids"
8x6" on cradled mdf panel
Commission
As you can see from the photos I used yesterday I ended up going with the composition (for the most part) of the 1st pic I posted...I didn't consciously do that, but in the end it suited my purposes for this requested painting.  However, I used the light and dark idea from the photo with the sun streaming behind (wanted those lights and darks) ...so, I guess it's a mix.  I left out one flower for composition purposes as my paper stream seemed to fill in for the 5th flower...but...it is finished.

No matter how many different ways I photographed this one it was a challenge to get the colors to read properly...and, as you all know each monitor is going to read this differently...sigh...but this seems close...on my monitor that is...lol

This is my first orchid to paint.  I found it interesting...delicate...fun!  Now I have to paint for an upcoming show...on PAPER...and...get ready for a demo in wax collage for Mountainside Art Guild...busy days...

HAPPY CREATING!

"PORTRAIT OF A SUNFLOWER" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA PAINTING OF A SUNFLOWER © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Portrait of a Sunflower"
12" x 12" mixed media on MDF with English Oak cradled sides
$300
AVAILABLE ON MY WEBSITE by clicking on the title so see others like it
OR YOU CAN USE PAY PAL by clicking on the button below!
It has been SO great getting back to work a little bit between house hunting!  I sat down yesterday and created this fun sunflower portrait with whimsical ribbons of the black and white weaving through...if you look closely you can also see it in a spiral in the center of the sunflower.  This piece is what I created on top of the "failed" painting from the other day.  The fun part of this is all the texture!!  To cover the previous work (which someone wanted to buy about 10 minutes too late as I'd covered it already!) I painted it with a layer of gesso...covered that with a layer of molding paste, and another layer of gesso...The English Oak sides fit perfectly with the subject matter (which MAY have been the reason I decided to do one more sunflower before the season ends).

Not to let much moss grow on my easel I'm already at work on a new aspen piece using mainly blue and orange in the background.  As we speak I'm busy with the addition of papers...and having a ball!!

HAPPY CREATING!

"SUNFLOWER" MIXED MEDIA 5X5 FLORAL PAINTING © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Sunflower"
5x5" mixed media on gallery wrap canvas
ON HOLD FOR A SHOW

This sunflower is painted over a good layer of flexible molding paste.  I love the texture it brings, but there was a practical reason I did this.  I have been having trouble with stretched canvas buckling a bit at the corners.  It probably doesn't bother anyone because it is so slight...but I hate it!...SO, I put a layer of paste over it and voila it takes the problem away!...I only wish I'd thought of it earlier.
I buy my canvas mostly at Meiningers ( a huge, prestigious art store)...so, I think on my next visit I'm going to have a chat with them about their certain brands of canvas! THERE, I've gotten this off my chest!

I tried taking this pic in several lights and you can't really see the purplish hue that is the background...it comes out mostly blue...sorry...still not the grand photographer!

This will be number 2 to be entered in a miniature show at the Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colorado this September....My next you ask??...a Pinion Pine Cone...:)

HAPPY CREATING!
