"Mt. Sneffels"

It was time to pull out another summit request for my mountain summit project.  Next in line are a few from Arizona that were suggested.  I enjoy capturing these summits; though they are the tippy top they all seem to have their own personality.  

"Mt. Sneffels" is a mountain in the San Juan Range near the town of Ouray in southwest Colorado.  This mountain summit rises to just over 14,150 ft., so is one of Colorado's 14ers as we call them.  Mt. Sneffels is named after the iconic peak in the Jules Verne’s novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth.  When painting this summit I take care to get the silhouette correct and then add a bit of texture to bring out some of the crags. "Mt. Sneffels" comes ready to frame or can sit on a small easel or just leaned against something on your favorite shelf.  The frame suggestion that is my favorite for my 6"x6" paintings is the floater frame.  (Frame not included).  I get my floater frames from pictureframes.com in the floater frame section. I like these frames as you can see the painting from edge to edge.

"Pikes Peak"

This is the North Face of Pikes Peak.  To me it is the most recognizable of this mountain.  The point of this project is to capture the summits/peaks of these mountains...which I am careful to keep recognizable. The bottom area is more interpretation...sometimes the close up of a summit is rather bare, so I include color or trees;  things of this nature that are found in the area...this I do for composition sake.  I always like to show the suggestion of framing so you can see what it might look like.  I like these floater frames that I find online at pictureframes.com. 

We've had quite a snow storm the past two days...over our 27" from last month...I'm not fond of this kind of weather...it isn't pretty anymore...just lots of work! lol  PS...please note the bluish green your screen may see for the sky is really more a little bluish...sigh...just can't seem to edit the correct sky color these days! lol

 

I usually take a photo of our table on the back deck...you can see what it has done this time!

This broom is what we can count on having got for totals...today it is 38" minus the two inches of melting that happened yesterday...yes, spring is a crazy time!

This may not look like much, but if you consider that there are stairs where that slope is...you get my drift...pun intended! lol

I am happy to say I FINALLY got to visit my wonderful family in Nebraska...my daughter and son in law and my two precious grand children Paxton and Gracyn.  Love those happy little faces for sure!

SO, after the survival of this latest storm I'm back at the easel...still working on my largish aspen painting and next in the series of summits is the Three Sisters!  Fun Doins!

"Longs Peak"

"Longs Peak" in Colorado is part of the Rocky Mountain National Park up near Estes Park.  When I painted this my husband said it is important to get the "knob".  He's a climber from way back, so I listened.  The typical view we get here from out east is two peaks...one being Mt. Meeker...BUT, since I was painting the summit of Longs I went with a close up version.  This fun little summit (which isn't so little) is

14, 259' high, so one of Colorado's 14ers.  I included a bit of acid free paper underneath a few areas, which is why I labeled it mixed media, but the majority of the painting is in oil.  "Longs Peak" is 6"x6" oil on panel and comes ready to frame or sit on a shelf or easel.  I like to show an example of framing (not included), in this 6"x6" gold floater frame.  I love floater frames for a lot of my work as it shows all sides.

I am still working on my 2'x2' aspen piece on cradled panel.  You can see I've now added aspen trees that are in various stages of complete.  On this piece, for now, I have added a few trees that do not go to the bottom giving a bit more sense of depth.  I am now working to add the holes and dings and lines that make the tree...then branches...then...?  fun thinking about what it will become!

Along with the art give aways and the new project that folks can order a "slice of life" painting, (CLICK HERE to read about the project.) I am starting a fun little series of mountain peaks.  I started it off with Mt. Evans; which is my go to mountain, but have asked folks to write me or comment the name of THEIR favorite peak...I'll add them to the growing list and paint them and then put them in my ETSY shop.  Just a way to stay fresh!  SO, if you have a favorite peak, let me know, I'll add it!

Mt. Evans Mini has some fun papers woven throughout, but is mostly oil with a smidge of modeling paste when needed.  I have included a photo of a frame suggestion so you can see how fun it would be framed!  This is a floater frame.  I enjoy them as you can see all the edges.  Mt. Evans Mini would also look great on a small easel or sitting on a shelf...

There is not much updating to this painting except to add more highlights than previously existed on the trees up top.  I knew at the time of painting that it needed highlights to unify it MORE to the rest of the painting, but there was so much paint on it every attempt to blend just disappeared! HA.  It was fine like it WAS, but it is much better like it IS.  Just goes to show, a little can go a long way!

 You can see here the highlights within the tree that help to describe the lights that are happening in this landscape...they are subtle, but if strong sunlight was hitting from the left, it would show up more than previously described.  

Like I said, it is simple, but just gives a bit more information.

And there you have it...I'm MUCH happier with it...so, as always, there is a reason some paintings come home with me!

"Tree Line"

This was yet ANOTHER piece I dreamed recently.  I have such a great love of trees, this is my respect.  It still has texture and color and pattern.  Notice the stamp and bits of paper along with the round shapes of texture.  The background is acrylic, and then there is modeling paste, paper and finally oil.  This is part of my "play" as I emerge into another stage of work.  VERY exciting for me.  I LOVE the simplicity in this piece...not my typical, and not the largest body of my work, but that is one thing I love about it! HA...every once in awhile I need to rest my eyes!  I call this whimsical and fun...It's unique depth with the wood sides make it a great piece to sit on a shelf...you can even put things on top of it!  A great little piece for decor!

even in this larger expanse with little subject matter I have added texture and subtle pattern.  FUN!

As with Aspen Dreams from my last post I have yet to decide what I want to do to the sides of this painting.  I don't know if I will stain them or paint them...Great fun to contemplate!

..."through Aspen Eyes" is an important piece for me as it is one of a last of it's kind as I move a little in direction.  It is HEALTHY and GOOD for an artist to grow and change.  I still LOVE these pieces...and I may do a few more here and there, but they will be considered part of my journey through creative experiences to a newer path.  NOT BETTER per say...just a part of my growth as an artist.  I love the amount of information in this painting.  A lot of paper and acrylic is in this painting, with some oil as well...so, a true mixed media piece!  The deer; at least I think it is a deer (lol) is one that stopped at my house to visit one day.  I gave him some brighter colors to reflect the beginning of my movement and growth.  When using brighter colors to depict something it will almost ALWAYS

work if you keep the values (light and dark) the same as in life.  The purples are my way to throw a little punch into this transitional piece!  The cradle sides of this panel painting are stained a nice color to fit in to almost any decor.  I still LOVE mixing abstract elements in my work with a bit of realism...this piece has abstract elements in the meadow part.  I love it for this piece.  As I play in my work in my process of growth, I see a bit more pattern and abstract elements mixed in.  Stay tuned for the next piece as explanation.  I absolutely LOVE working my aspen trees with the detail...so, I see them popping up as I continue on my journey!

 

detail of deer...if you see some cloudy areas it comes from adding other elements to a painting that I first called finished.  I suspect it is the medium and will be eliminated when I seal the entire painting as it dries.

"Mountain Sunflower"

Though the subject matter is this mountain sunflower, the landscape behind gives you the beauty of it's surroundings!  "Mountain Sunflower" is painted in oil over acrylic and acid free paper with a bit of texture in the mountains and foreground.   Painted on a cradled panel with stained sides, this piece of mountain beauty is ready to hang, or, it's unique depth will allow for sitting on a shelf!  "Mountain Sunflower" will be ready for shipping on or about March 14, 2014 when it is fully dry.  Oranges and Yellows tend to be the slowest drying; or more accurately, oxidizing, so shipping is a bit further out than most others with different colors.

This painting was fun, but a challenge.  I enjoy VERY MUCH putting in the abstract qualities that I do; using paper and texture and paint to weave in something that reads; in THIS case as landscape, but also works as abstract!  I used texture in the mountains and in the foreground in spots, and painted in the sunflower with oil.  The end result is fun, but sometimes there is a bit of reworking and removing of parts that don't work well, and that can be a bit of a challenge.  My motto is NEVER BE AFRAID to eliminate what isn't working...if it is the ENTIRE painting, there are lessons learned, but don't keep something just because it took some time to do!

Last week I sold Baby G...the collector got to choose the frame color.  In this case it was the soft white that was a part of the giraffe baby background color.  I think she made a good choice!!

I drive by a house near our C-470 quite often.  A house has sat near the highway for years.  One day the owner built a berm and put pine trees on top.  It looked so nice I had to stop and take a few photos; well, I didn't actually stop...I drove by with my camera facing the berm and snapped without looking! HA.  I was lucky I got a good enough shot to create "Five Pines"...I enjoy the buttery"ness" of the sky and the color in the foreground that implies movement.  A fun take on the pine!

 

It started out with sky in oil and paper in, well, paper...lol

 

I stained the sides a nice green that compliments the painting perfectly!

"Five Pines" is ready to hang, or, because of it's unique depth it can actually sit on a shelf or mantle!

Up in the mountains of Colorado you will find some beautiful, unspoiled meadows. It is in these meadows that you will find elk wandering about freely. "High Meadow Elk" is painted in just this setting with Mt. Evans in the background. Painted on mdf with 1.75 thick cradle that is stained in a Vermont Maple to compliment. The background is largely acrylic with some acid free paper added. The elk is painted in oil. Ready to hang, or, because of it's unique depth it can set on a shelf. This strong contrast piece is a bit of oil and paper all rolled into one.  I LOVE, LOVE adding paper to my compositions when I can...it's just a little more ME!  I wanted to show the whole piece, thus the photo expanded to the wall a bit...This gallery wrap canvas is 1.5" deep. This is from our trip to visit the aspen this past year up Guenella Pass above Georgetown here in lovely Colorado.  There is an area where the aspen are so tall and skinny...those are my favorites of all! 

Yesterday I was trapped up here once again...SNOW...AGAIN...but I enjoyed our visitors ouside my kitchen window...They are so comfortable with me now they often don't even turn around to check me out...

I call this one "Backsides"...not only are the deer not interested in smiling at me, but a little other visitor was showing me his "best side" as well...tee hee!

I call this "Birdy's Got Back"...

and, FINALLY...I got a profile at least...

 

and, then...I get these moments to see my grandson...and suddenly the snow doesn't seem SO bad...

His dad called this one "Big Gulp"...

If this painting looks familiar, well, that is because it is merely a tweaked (again) version of the previously known and tweaked "Mt. Evans Layers"...yes...it IS true that if a painting hangs around very long it will be tweaked most likely! So, as it was hanging in my home studio awaiting the sale of  another large painting I kept looking at it...and thus the tweaking...so...here is the original (well, once tweaked version) You can see there is not MUCH difference, except for the elephant in the room...the darker version of the mountain...it just didn't do it for me...so, I greyed it down a bit...tweaked it a bit and NOW it's finished version.  I feel it works better with the whole piece...  I also added a bit here and there...some highlights on the rocks...and a small stand of aspen in the top right...

 

 

 

 

SO, it is on it's way to Creations Art and Gifts in Louisville to live for a bit.  WHEW...maybe I can stop tweaking this one for awhile! HA!  Now it's back to work on various Christmas gifts (of which I will show you when I'm finished), and commissions!  HAPPY CREATING!!
