"Sunny D" a sunflower

What a cheery flower; the sunflower! It is TRULY a Sunny Delight...thus the name given! "Sunny D" is painted in oil on a 4x4" slightly textured panel. Alone it can sit on an easel, or can be framed in your favorite 4x4" frame. (remember 1/2" is taken on all sides), OR for .50 more I can mount it on a 5x5" off white matt so you can frame it in your own 5x5" frame, OR I can send it matted in the off white backer board and in the gold leaf wood 5x5" frame as shown. Any way you choose it, that special spot will be sunnier just to have it there! "Sunny D" will be ready to ship on July 21, 2014 when it is dry! Shipping is set for the framed version, but if you purchase just the painting and or the matt backer I will adjust the shipping accordingly!

 

Yesterday was a wildlife party around here.  I've got baby birds, so mom and dad have posed LOTS for me...here is one...I think this is a wren...any thoughts?

 We've also had a big young buck hanging around the property of late.  He doesn't much care for my hubby...snorts and paws at the ground, but for me, he just seems curious...

I highly suspect both these will end up in paintings at one time or another...! FUN DOINS!

It's THAT time of year...

This pot was part of a workshop I taught a year ago on different things you could do with clay pots...The first was the most obvious...paint it...we went from there...creatures, bird baths...etc.

I don't know what this vine is called, but every year it goes from green to this glorious red!

Of course you knew I couldn't resist the aspen! My hubby comes home today...when he left they were green...he's in for a treat!!

Yep, It is that certain time of year that is supposed to be fall...but with the beautiful Indian Summer it is sometimes fallish...sometimes summerish...So, while I am knee deep in the Memorial Stadium painting (yikes...all those people...) (and, NO I'm not painting them individually)...:) I thought I would post some inspiration!

This is a fun, but odd time of year for me...I have a closet only big enough for one season, so this time of year I have tubs of clothes from winter...summer clothes in the closet (NOW with a couple sweaters too)...trying to slowing change out...It feels disorganized! Well...it IS!

I got to thinking how I sort of carry that feeling over to my paintings; well, a little bit. I want to paint flowers when it is warm...aspen when it feels chilly, and snow when it...well...snows! I have sunflowers on my table still...AND I have beautiful changes in leaves outside...so, here is my little mixed "closet" of inspiration for you...Some summer, and definitely some fall!

"Sunflower Quad"

"Sunflower Quad" turned out to be a lot of fun to do. I enjoy very much slapping paint on in a seemingly random way, perhaps sanding things down a bit...adding texture and then looking at it from fresh eyes and putting down the finishing touches. I don't usually work in even numbers...but sometimes the composition just works and I am glad that sticking to rules isn't a hard and fast rule! This piece is 8"x8" canvas on panel. Seems it is turning out to be a favorite substrate to work on for me. I enjoy knowing it can be framed or can sit as is on a shelf or an easel.

I have been wanting to talk about my signature. I don't know if you have noticed, but I sign my work Lane. Lane used to be my last name. I was born with one name, my father left the picture when I was very small and my mother remarried, so I was a Johnson for a time. I married early in life and became that man's name, and then was a single mom. I went through a time where I was trying to fit with my life, so I chose a name I liked and changed it! So, Lane means a lot to me as it was the beginning of my OWN identity! I have to admit that it was so much fun to change my name to what ever I wanted that for a short time I considered changing my first name...You have to be careful as creating a new name is a heady thing...and for about 20 minutes in my life I considered "Hazard" as my new first name! THANK GOODNESS I had wonderful friends who shook me out of that phase quickly! HA. I am very proud of my married name. Lane is now my legal middle name. I've known my now husband for many years and I admire him and am proud of him, but my art is so personal to me, and reflects my own personal journey my husband is totally understanding in why I sign my paintings as I do. I do, however, sign my paintings with my first name when they are done specifically for my family. They like the "custom" signature that means something to them.

It is fun to be able to make decisions as an artist both in how and why and what we paint...even as to how we sign our paintings.

Sunflower Quad Unfinished

"Sunflower Quad" is an 8x8" acrylic canvas on panel that I started this morning and had to dash out for a quick errand. When I came back I found it rather interesting in its unfinished state so decided to post it. As I've said before I find it a bit challenging to post a piece in process...makes for an interesting finish. I don't necessarily feel a lot of pressure, but I do find it a bit exciting. We shall see tomorrow what it became!

Bow Down Final

"Bow Down" as it turns out was nearly finished. I decided the texture in the piece was more interesting if you can see it! I finished the flower and tweaked the shadow areas in the leaves. As stated yesterday it is 9"x6" on 3/4" canvas covered board. I took this picture at my last visit to the Botanic Gardens in Denver. They have a great sunflower area. What struck me about this was the relatively small bloom compared to the leaves. I know sunflower leaves are rather large, but this one seemed almost dwarfed. Being short you may notice a lot of my sunflower pics painted are from below, unless it is from a vase I arranged. I get a kick out of my ants eye view sometimes.

I would like to welcome my newest followers. Last time I looked we have 70; which is only 5 away from my next thank you to my followers give-away. For those that have been with me awhile you will know that when we reach 75 I will choose from one of you and give you a choice from the contest choices on my sidebar and will gladly mail it to the winner. So, we aren't far away!

I'm happy to report that my necklace has been found! It had fallen into a bowl of fiber balls that was nearby. I'm not sure how that occurred, but I'm thrilled I found it as well as didn't go crazy and start blaming everyone within ear shot! The handyman, however was released from finishing here due to his unreliability as well as comments. Sorry for him, but I guess we are all responsible for our own behavior.

Sunflower

"Sunflower" is a 6"x6"x1 3/8" canvas wrap around that is painted on the sides and fitted with wire on back so it is ready to hang. What I like about these canvas pieces is they are wide enough to sit on a shelf or mantle also. I painted this with palette knife and some brush. Sometimes I just need to paint thickly! There is something really satisfying about slapping that paint on and moving to the next area!

Above the Crowd

"Above the Crowd" is a 9x6" canvas on panel acrylic. Another memory of the day in Nebraska taking my kids to church camp and driving down the dirt roads right in the middle of sunflower fields. The experience stays with me to this day. I used the same Cerulean Blue sky as I did in "Sunflower Field" (posted just before our storm experience). I think I have another one in me for this series...so off to work!

"Sunflower Field"

"Sunflower Field" is an 8x8 canvas on panel. I'm not sure how well the photo translates (I suppose that is true for all the photos as we all have different monitors) as we are literally in the clouds today. I'm waiting for the now amended 1.5-3' of snow predicted for our area, and REALLY hoping they missed the mark on this one!

Being in the clouds all day long I wanted to be warm so I painted from a photo I took many years ago when I was taking my kids to church camp in Nebraska. It was incredible...here we were driving down a dirt road and I turned and all of a sudden we were in the midst of all these sunflowers. I'd never seen anything like it before. Some had heads bigger than mine (and that is saying a lot!). I stood on the roof of my little car and took tons of photos.

I've painted this before...years ago. My mother has several of those I did...Back then I felt I had to paint each and every flower face...and it was quite a few more than I chose to show on this painting!

So, I really just needed to be filled with the warmth of this memory of a wonderful day one summer so many years ago. Be warm!
