The "Three Sisters" Faith, Hope and Charity are a complex volcano of three volcanic peaks of the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the Cascade Range in the state of Oregon. Each exceeding 10,000 feet in elevation, they are the third, fourth, and fifth highest peaks in the state of Oregon, and are located in the Three Sisters Wilderness about 10 miles south of the nearest town of Sisters.  "Three Sisters" is painted in oil on a 6"x6" panel and comes ready to frame or sit on an easel or even just perch on a shelf.  My favorite frame for this type of painting is a floater frame shown in the frame suggestion below (not included).  A floater frame is one where the painting sits such that all sides are showing.  I find my floater frames at pictureframes.com.

WOW, thanks to all of you who wrote in comments and e-mails in support of my no good very bad day yesterday and some before!!  It truly DID help me refocus and get back to myself!  I SO knew my blogger family would be there for me!!  You are all AWESOME!!

I found a way to find some peace in my day amidst the craziness...I took my ipod and stuck those buds in my ears on my free period and cranked that music up and just painted this second of three bird...which I'm calling "Sitting Pretty".  It just looks like a coy little thing saying "I'm so pretty, but I'm gonna look shy"...FUN...thanks all!! 

Here are the two so far...the third one will be tricky as it is sitting in pebbles...kind of a strange pose...we shall see!!

AND...I'm happy to announce that Liz from ART WITH LIZ sent a contest choice for the April painting challenge...I'm lovin this bird!!  Gave me the creeps all over again when I remember how he looked like he was just STARING me down...An awesome likeness to have done that!!  THANKS LIZ!!  I'm putting you in the drawing!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MICHELLE...and things in process...

My FIRST thing is to say Happy Birthday to my sweet girl!  This is one of my favorite pictures of Michelle...today as I came home from school I was thinking how much MORE I liked what I brought home 27 years ago...yep...a beautiful baby girl...instead of partially finished projects and school work which I brought home today! WHO WOULDN'T! lol  So...Happy Day my girl!!  love you!!

Second order of business is my portrait painted by Carol Nelson was chosen as the favorite from her last 10...YIPPEE!!  I agree Carol....mine was best!!

As promised I am showing you what happened with the shoe morph...As things go with teachers...our examples usually get MOSTLY done before we have to lay it aside and help the kids finish theirs...so this was mine...if you look closely you can see the shoe coming out here and there...FUNNY...reminded me of college!

The background was underpainted with an orange color and at this time is left to show through...I'm working on what I want to do with the background...and add a swipe or two to the birds and trees and THEN I may call this finished.

These fun birds on a light are in process...I may not have much yet to do, but want to play with it a bit. This pic was taken in San Diego on a very cloudy day...I thought the bird in the middle was hilarious with his feathers all ruffled up like this...so I painted it as it was...

Because the birds were off a bit in the distance, and the sky was very grey I decided to mix two pics...my plan is to make sure the palms stay way back...very muted and little detail, so as to bring the birds to the place of honor they should have...so that is all I got done in between kids finding me in my office to ask a question about this or that...even on our off hours teachers can't hide! HA

Another beautiful entry!

 

I was SO happy to get home today to see yet another wonderful entry for this month's painting challenge by Dean H....you have to hop over to his blog...aptly entitled "Deano's Den".  Dean is a wonderful painter and he has captured this lion beautifully! He's called it "Crown of Gold"...YES! Just look at that light!  Thank you DEAN...and of course Dean will go into the drawing at the end of the month!!

I was especially glad to come home to some beauty as I had a less than fulfilling day...aaarrrggghhh!!  I try not to whine here...I'm soooo sorry, but today I just have to "cry" a little "out loud"!  I'm hoping I will be forgiven!!  I usually try to find the rainbow when it rains on my life...and I'm sure I will...perhaps tomorrow! 

As you know I have taken a long term sub job at a local high school.  I've spent weeks before the assignment visiting the school and the classroom to get to know the kids and to understand what would be needed from me in order to give the job my very best.  It is my personality to give %110 when I commit to something.  I'm not sorry I did that...Today I went to school to find an e-mail from the teacher who had the baby telling me she had decided to come back a month early.  No call, no pre-warning...just a simple e-mail.  On one hand I can understand the issue of finances driving her back...as she stated...but on the other hand I felt a little kicked in the stomach as I had moved life around and set aside the time and effort to do this and was counting on the finances myself...WHINE, WHINE!  lol...with a little tear in my eye! :) The frustrated, and yes...a little hurt female in me wanted to say..."but you knew the finances when you blocked this time out"...but I only said it in my head...Besides it does no good to add to a situation...so...I plugged on today feeling a little disconnected and my mind was scrambling...Then I remembered I'd been praying for God to give me clear direction...so how can I argue with an answer...Perhaps He knew I would be too bedraggled or something...I don't know, and I don't care to question Him. So, if I can hold out my return to my "other" life will be early May.  yea..(she says in a small voice tonight!)

Perhaps it wouldn't have been soooo distressing if I hadn't gotten up at 4 a.m.  I was laying there and it popped in my head to check on the book situation with the paper company I've told you about.  I haven't heard a word...I "won" the February contest, but have yet to receive my prize, or any word....there was no March newsletter as promised that would announce it...hmmm  The little niggle started..."Oh Saundra...have you been too naive...did you give away the farm and NOT take care of business properly"...SO, I e-mailed the person I've been dealing with just to ask what was happening...and it came back almost immediately as undeliverable...WHOA...hold on here...embarrassment, feeling foolish, trying NOT to make more of this than I should...OK girl...just try again...so I did...this one didn't come back...whew...BUT, in the letter I asked the questions...I'm just wondering...you said you would send the mock up for my approval...you had a deadline of several weeks ago and still I haven't heard...is there a problem..."I hate to bring it up...I'm embarrassed, but am I going to get my prize for winning the contest (the little artist girl in me was looking forward to it)...your website doesn't have any lesson plans...the price stated there is widely different than what you told me...am I confused...is this legitimate..?"  WAY too much groveling I did...EMBARRASSED again!  I never heard back from her...a FIRST...she always responded within hours when I was giving away the farm (my WHOLE original and new process) BUT, I wanted to write this to you all as a reminder that when, IF we create something new and different...be careful, protect ourselves...Having said all that I will give this person a day or two to respond...to explain...to give me something to show me that I wasn't taken...and then I don't know what...hmmm...lesson learned?  Is that all I should do??  Don't jump to conclusions...perhaps several family members have been in the hospital...perhaps her computer crashed and she weren't able to get it fixed for a month...perhaps she is revamping the website to correct the information...perhaps...perhaps...I'm wondering now how many perhapssss should I allow before...what?  Hmmm she says again...Lesson learned Saundra??  I mainly wanted to bring this up here as a cautionary tale...IF and WHEN you brilliant artists come up with something unique...be careful...Perhaps this story will have a better ending than I feel like it will right now...Let's hope so!

This is a compilation of a lot of different things that I feel pretty good about!  This piece is created on a 12x12" cradled wood panel.  I began by painting a background with acrylics and then stamped and painted...I then added my sunflower paper casts made from newspaper with vintage buttons for the centers.  Debuting on this piece is my version of a black bird...perching on one of the sunflowers...And...it is all encased in wax...Which, by the way, is very sturdy...won't melt on a hot day!!  This will be available in the EYE CANDY section of my website when I am absolutely SURE I am finished! I have to play with this one in my mind for a bit longer...

Today is a fun day for me...CAROL NELSON posted her portrait of ME as #75 in her 100 portraits series.  I just LOVE IT!!  Carol was able to capture the fun, goofy, childlike side of me...:)  JUST WHAT I WANTED!!  I am SO excited that I had to post it here again, though I encourage you to click on Carol's name above to see her blog and her other wonderful portraits!

 "Zoe's Giraffe"

As it turns out my trip to the zoo yesterday so inspired me to finish "Zoe's Giraffe"!!  I heard that Zoe's nursery was going to have some giraffe things and was to be a green, orange purply kind of color scheme...so...this wonderfully fun little baby giraffe worked great as a fauvist painting! 

I am having fun playing with underpainting... so I gave what I knew the background's green color to be a red underpainting to give it a little more depth...and the baby giraffe had an orangy underpainting that I did allow to peek through a bit here and there...if you look closely!  I'm still playing with underpainting, and I find that I tend to cover it up more than I plan to......sigh.  Learn...learn...learn Saundra!! :)

SO...before I could finish little Zoe's Giraffe I found that I had beat my brushes to DEATH so had to go get some more...SOOOOO...all you oil painters out there...remind this acrylic painter the BEST way to handle the care and love of the oil painters brush PULEASE!! I sure would appreciate it!!

When the week is up I will be back in the classroom as Spring Break will be over...So, I want to begin a painting challenge for any or ALL of my followers!  (HINT:  if you want to participate and aren't a follower...just begin to follow!! :)) The challenge will go as previous challenges on this blog have gone...It is as follows:  Take a photo or photos...that I post and paint it...e-mail me (art4life44@hotmail.com) the finished piece and I will put your name into a drawing.  The winner will get to choose from our contest choices that are seen on the sidebar of this blog!  That is all there is to it!!  This challenge will be over on April 30!  We will do a different challenge for the month of May.

Mound of Sweaters

Tomorrow will be my 1 year anniversary for my blog! It doesn't seem like a year, but what it does seem like is one of the all time favorite things I've done in my life! I've "met" so many wonderful people, and I've questioned myself, and I've shared some of life with you all...it's been awesome...but more on that tomorrow.

A REMINDER!!...tomorrow I will choose from one of my followers and that person will have a choice from the contest items I've created. I will choose tomorrow and announce the winner at the end of the day, so my post will be as late as I can stay awake. I've decided that anyone who comments today and tomorrow about what their favorite post and or favorite painting was this past year I will add your name to the pot twice! SO, today I've set a little challenge for myself...I'm doing something with this mound of sweaters...anyone want to venture a guess?? Yep, this afternoon needs to be a break for me while I ruminate about things and clean my studio...NO, I have not forgotten to finish my large aspen, or the two small ones...just taking a creative break.

"Pine on the Rocks"

I had to start somewhere after such a LONG absence from the old studio...so I finished a little piece I started WAY back before the holidays!! I used one of my techniques for edges that I am growing fond of...:) I added this little 5 7/8" x 9" acrylic canvas on panel to my website this morning. Felt good to just get anything completed!!

So, after selling one of my larger aspen paintings over the holidays I realized I needed to add to my on hand paintings, so I'm preparing to do a few. I think the first one will be a 30x24. I think I need to work large again for a little bit to keep that skill up as well! You know how it is...if you don't use it you loose it!!

I found a new gallery...just a baby...only been alive 3 weeks just right around the corner (well...around the corner in mountain terms) that I'm going to try to visit in hopes of showing work there in the future. This is another avenue I have totally neglected...so wish me luck...It is a contemporary gallery, but I think my collage aspen pieces might just fit in...The owner wants work that is reminiscent of this area. I don't know...but aspen just reaks of this area!! Any thoughts on my work as contemporary would be much appreciated!! I just love what I do, so it is almost funny to me that I struggle so in the marketing area...

Stay tuned as I am also getting ready to open an etsy shop. I will put my small works in as well as the other random items I am always doing to take a creative breather from my painting...

So, much on the horizon for this upcoming new year!! Also...another drawing for my one year anniversary as a blogger, which is January 11...More info on my next post...FUN STUFF FOLKS!! Happy upcoming NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!

Pine Forest Completed

I finally finished my 4x4" contest give-away collage. "Pine Forest" is done like the others on fiberboard and is a combination acrylic and collage. When I do one of these I always feel like I am in a peaceful place. Good place to be especially lately! This painting will be added to the contest choices. Last time I looked we are only five followers away from the next give-away. For those of you who are new to my blog the contest is to thank my followers! When we reach 75 followers I will draw one name from you all and the winner will be given a chance to choose from the contest offerings on my sidebar! That is all there is to it! Bow Down Final

"Bow Down" as it turns out was nearly finished. I decided the texture in the piece was more interesting if you can see it! I finished the flower and tweaked the shadow areas in the leaves. As stated yesterday it is 9"x6" on 3/4" canvas covered board. I took this picture at my last visit to the Botanic Gardens in Denver. They have a great sunflower area. What struck me about this was the relatively small bloom compared to the leaves. I know sunflower leaves are rather large, but this one seemed almost dwarfed. Being short you may notice a lot of my sunflower pics painted are from below, unless it is from a vase I arranged. I get a kick out of my ants eye view sometimes.

I would like to welcome my newest followers. Last time I looked we have 70; which is only 5 away from my next thank you to my followers give-away. For those that have been with me awhile you will know that when we reach 75 I will choose from one of you and give you a choice from the contest choices on my sidebar and will gladly mail it to the winner. So, we aren't far away!

I'm happy to report that my necklace has been found! It had fallen into a bowl of fiber balls that was nearby. I'm not sure how that occurred, but I'm thrilled I found it as well as didn't go crazy and start blaming everyone within ear shot! The handyman, however was released from finishing here due to his unreliability as well as comments. Sorry for him, but I guess we are all responsible for our own behavior.

Night Aspen

"Night Aspen" is another 4x4" contest give-away choice. Of course it isn't really night...but the dark blue against the white made me think of night. This is a small version of the 24x12" piece done earlier. This little piece is on a fiberboard with dovetail slots for hanging on back, or has its own little easel. As I love to do so often I have mixed acrylic with collage papers. The trunks are from my "special" handmade aspen trunk paper. When we reach 75 followers I will draw from the list and give the winner a choice from the contest choices on my sidebar.

We are still in the middle of the black mold saga. With the offending area cleaned up, removed and sheet rock replaced I am still waiting for testing in other areas of our basement as well as a new toilet to be installed. It feels a little like I have leprosy even though it is in the house. Seems funny to attach that feeling to my person! What all this HAS done is open up the most extensive cleaning jag I've ever been on! We found a leak in the old toilet, so I know it wasn't my housecleaning to blame, but it feels so icky here I just have this need to have it ALL totally clean now...including painting and even looking for new dining room chairs as ours are old and dirty! HA...so...am I going crazy? Don't think so...just waiting on contractors who never show up has left me feeling a bit helpless to get the problem handled as quickly as I would like...so I guess I'm doing what I CAN do...:) Anyone out there relate??

Marker Apples

and SO...just like I feared it has been a couple of days from...:)...Still waiting for mold experts and contractors and the like to come and deal with our mold situation. Today is the day they come back. Yesterday I spent the morning at orientation for subbing for the schools here and the afternoon cleaning out rooms that have had water damage in the past so they can tear into the walls and check...

All the activity has left me without a minute to paint, so I pulled something from WAY back! I've actually had it matted and will frame it because I like it, but more, I like the story behind it.

In 1976 I was attending a then small Christian college called Harding College in Searcy Arkansas. My parents sent me so far from Denver cuz I liked a boy that was a bad boy and they wanted to get me as far from him as possible...I was a rebellious spirit of sorts back then (probably still am in certain ways). We had to wear dresses to class and it got COLD in the winters, plus the boys would sit on the rock wall by the cafeteria and call out numbers for our legs and I thought that was barbaric! So, I wrote a paper and took it to the board and got the rule changed so we could wear pants. Part of my paper was so graphic (tasteful, but for Christian men a little embarrassing) that when I read the part about the boys and went into a bit more detail they blushed!...tee hee See...I broke their star football players finger because he was trying to touch stuff that was mine...so perhaps they just didn't want anymore broken football players fingers...who knows...but the rule was changed...

Anyway I digress (but I really wanted to tell you about the dress thing)...I had an art teacher that drove me crazy...If I put hours into a piece he'd give me a C...if I just threw it together in my dorm room the last minute he'd give me an A (we all know why don't we...coming from an artist point of view) So, one day we were talking about markers I mean the big ole sharpies. I told him I could do a still life with them and he said he didn't think I could do them well enough...and that was all it took...I went back to my dorm room and created these three apples with marker. I got an A. It was the first time he and I agreed on anything...

Later that week I said I could do a giant apple with marker...he said I couldn't...I did...I got an A...and if I ever find it, I'll post it too...:) So, "Marker Apples" from 1976! Jane Hunt is the winner of the summer challenge contest! I am so happy to be sending her choice which was "Daisies a Plenty"! Congratulations Jane! Jane is a very creative and excellent painter. If you have not seen her work I encourage you to pop over to her blog called Daily Paintings by Jane Hunt. She uses a texture in her work that makes it very distinctive. Jane was recently juried in to the Daily Painters blog. Those of you that are familiar with that blog will know that they recently closed their site as they had a large number of artists. Jane was one they chose during this closing process. They wanted work that was very distinctive and well done and I certainly believe Jane fit the bill beautifully.

I want to thank everyone who participated in this challenge contest. It was so much fun and very rewarding to see what you submitted and get to know you all a little better. Very worth it for me.

Cactus Crowd

"Cactus Crowd" is 8x8" canvas on panel. This particular panel is 1/8" wide. I've stained the sides and back so it can sit on an easel or shelf, and is thin enough to frame also. I like working on substrates that are versatile enough to work in different situations. This piece is mostly acrylic with a bit of texture on the cactus for effect. The texture on this one is much more subtle than on the other cactus piece I did, but it is just enough to rough up the surface a bit.

Duck Duck Goose??

This is our latest entry into the summer give-away challenge presented by Liz Pearson. She is the one who also presented her version of my Shadow kitty...I got such a kick out of this one. Not only do I love her representation of the photo, but she wasn't too sure if it was a duck or goose...I wasn'teither...So, I named this Duck Duck Goose? Some of you bird fans out there might just be able to settle this for me...until then, Thank you Liz (you can get to her site Art With Liz by clicking on the title). Hawaii Palms

"Hawaii Palms" is on 8x10" cradled panel that is stained on the sides. Originally I had anticipated adding more collage items, but ended up being happy with the trunks to the palms. Small as they are the tiny extra bit of texture brings them forward. My son sent me this picture from his recent trip to Hawaii and I was immediately fascinated with these mound hills off in the distance. I don't know what they are, but I've not seen anything like it, so it had to go in. This is added to the list I'm going to let my son choose from, and what is left I will add to my website.

The photo is the last I will post for our summer give-away contest. Red Bird was taking a bath in my mom's tree when I was there in June. I was surprised to see how long she sat there letting the sprinkler wash her off...Might be fun for any of you bird lovers out there!

Another Beautiful Entry!

It is rainy and SO dark here today that I can't photograph my latest, but that is OK, because I have a beautiful entry from Nancy Medina to post for our summer challenge contest. She calls this "Berries and Creme" and it is beautiful. I posted this photo a bit ago and remember commenting on all the PINK and sort of shuddered...and yet she attempted and completed something so wonderful with the photo. So, for your viewing pleasure! Nancy also completed another flower painting earlier on in the contest, so as promised her name goes in the drawing twice! I encourage anyone who wants to wander through my posts from the last couple of months to try one of the photos. You have until July 19 at midnight to enter!

Hopefully the sun will come out tomorrow so I can photograph the latest beach scene from Hawaii from photos my son sent...if not...hmmm...I may try it anyway.

My friend and fellow blogger Liz Pearson painted this beautiful portrait of Shadow my cat that I lost through an accident at home. I posted the picture of Shadow as a part of our summer competition challenge. You can read about Liz's version of Shadow on her blog Art with Liz. Not only did Liz capture the feeling of who Shadow was, but in a way I have yet to be able to even attempt. Thank you Liz for painting Shadow!
