"DRAGONFLY" ORIGINAL OIL ON PANEL; FRAMED © SAUNDRA LANE FINE ART

This is my 3rd entry for the Mountainside Miniature show coming up in just a few days!  I love painting dragonflies...and...the story goes that...

When a dragonfly lands on you, you will hear excellent news from someone far away from home. A dead dragonfly symbolizes sad news. Dragonfly symbolism crosses and combines with that of the butterfly and change. The dragonfly symbolizes going past self-created illusions that limit our growing and changing. Dragonflies are a symbol of the sense of self that comes with maturity.

They are fantastic flyers, darting like light, twisting, turning, changing direction, even going backwards as the need arises. They are inhabitants of two realms - starting with water, and moving to the air with maturity, but staying close to water. Some people who have the dragonfly as their totem have had emotional and passionate early years, but as they get older they achieve balance with mental clarity and control. They gain an expression of the emotional and mental together.

Dragonflies are old and adaptive insects, and are most powerful in the summer under the effects of warmth and sunlight. Their colors are a result of reflecting and refracting the power of light. As a result, they are associated with color magic, illusion in causing others only to see what you wish, and other mysticism.

The are often represented in Japanese paintings, representing new light and joy. To some Native Americans they are the souls of the dead. Faerie stories say that they used to be real dragons.

Dragonflies are reminders that we are light and can reflect the light in powerful ways if we choose to do so. "Let there be light" is the divine prompting to use the creative imagination as a force within your life. They help you to see through your illusions and allow your own light to shine in a new vision.

Whatever they are to you...a dragonfly is a pretty little creature for sure!

UPDATING ETSY; "DRAGONFLY IN REPOSE" OIL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Dragonfly in Repose"
7"x5" oil on panel
$85

One of the things I've been doing is updating my ETSY shop.  I fell in love with dragonflies when I painted one for my dear friend and CO-GRANDMA, Diana Grimes.  My daughter actually commissioned one for Diana's Christmas present...I started studying them and became interested in painting them pretty...cuz folks, in real life close up they are kinda scary! HA...well, their bodies...not their wings.

The frames like these I make myself by using a base frame and adding molding and then paint and stain.  I really enjoy making these frames to go with my paintings of this size...lots of fun!

"DRAGONFLY GLAM" ORIGINAL ACRYLIC ON STRETCHED CANVAS © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Dragonfly Glam"
12x12" acrylic on stretched 3/4" canvas; painted on sides
$100 + $12.50 shipping

This fun colorful dragonfly was painted in acrylic in a paint and sip class I recently taught.  She was my demo!  The glam part that doesn't show up really great is we added a little bit of glitter that makes her shimmer ...The glitter was added to her wings...FUN!  In this class I used vine charcoal to draw each part for my students...and liked the effect so much I kept it when we finished and sprayed the
sealer right over it.  She comes ready to hang as you can see!

Even though I designed this painting, it isn't my usual "fare" so to speak, so I'm offering it for sale RIGHT from here!  Just a fun little bit of color and whimsy!

I'd say the color is more accurate on the small side view pic I have here...I took photos that kept sort of yellowing out the color...even with adjustments...sigh...but the purity of color is best on this fun little one to the right here.

I'm deep into the process of gathering and accepting photos for my 100 PET PORTRAITS IN 100 DAYS  project. I still need more photos...so send them along...just remember they must be clear shots of head and "shoulders" of your pet...or that I can easily crop to a square format...and there you go!!  E-mail them to me at art4life44@hotmail.com.  It starts in 7 days!!  FUN DOINS!

"DRAGONFLY IN REPOSE" ORIGINAL OIL ON 7"X5" TEXTURED PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Dragonfly in Repose"
7"x5" oil on textured panel
On hold for Jan/Feb show in Littleton, CO
I have fallen in love with dragonflies!  I think it happened when I began painting them at the request of my Conifer gallery owner; Luna's Mandala.  This one is completely different than the others...but still quite fun to paint!  I love how there are lost and found areas in the wings...and the colors of the body are fun!  I work hard not to make it look scary like a real close up dragonfly can look...just sort of dreamy and soft, but with good color.
I'm painting some smallish paintings for a show I will be in at the Stanton Gallery in Littleton, Co in January and February...this will be one of them.  I'm working on a fun frame to put her in...stay tuned for that!

"DRAGONFLY IN PURPLE AND GREEN" ORIGINAL OIL ON 4X4" TEXTURED PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Dragonfly in Purple and Green"
4"x4" oil on textured panel
$30

I just can't seem to let the dragonfly thing go, so another little winged creature for my ETSY shop!

H
As always, I offer this painting with a choice of black or off white 5x5" backer boards in case anyone wants to frame them with all their sides showing!  I've been scouting the thrift stores for more frames I can re-purpose, but they have been in short supply of late, so I keep a lookin!

A little later this morning I will be leaving for my little growing family in Nebraska for a visit.  As announced the coming baby is a GIRL, and she will be arriving in early March, so there are rooms to paint (of course Paxton needs a new wall color too!), and little dresses and such to buy...and maybe an outfit for my pretty daughter!  SO, OFF TO FUN TIMES!

"DRAGONFLY IN GREEN AND BLUE" ORIGINAL OIL ON TEXTURED 4X4" PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Dragonfly in Blue and Green"
4x4" oil on textured panel

This light and airy little dragonfly is a symbol for change and light; a perfect combination for any decor! The background is a soft tanish with blue highlights. You can purchase her as is and sit her on a small easel, or you can frame her in your favorite 4" x 4" frame (keep in mind the frames take 1/2" on all sides), or for just .50 I can mount her on a black or off white 5"x5" backer board so you can frame her in your favorite 5"x5" frame with all the sides showing! The two examples shown are not for sale, but you can find the black frame at Michaels, and the off white frame on ETSY at Rustic and Refined Design! "Dragonfly in Green and Blue" will be ready to ship on or about November 1, 2014 when she is totally dry!

I also just finished a fun piece of furniture that went to my gallery in Westminster; the Aar River Gallery.  I'm thinking I'm hooked on dragonflies of late!
Painted in a beautiful light shade of sage (I consider a neutral), with some paper and palm leaves to boot, this fun piece was a joy to paint!

"DRAGONFLY II" ORIGINAL OIL MINI AT LUNA'S MANDALA © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Dragonfly II"
oil on textured 4"x4" panel (1/2" thick)
$45

I enjoyed painting the first dragonfly for Luna's Mandala that I just had to do another one.  I try to keep my work as affordable as I can.  This was a request from Luna herself, so it can only be found at the gallery up in Conifer Colorado!  This little girl sits on her own easel!  However, there are slots on the back for hanging if that is the choice!

"DRAGONFLY" ORIGINAL OIL ON TEXTURED PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Dragonfly"
7"x5" oil on textured panel; Framed as shown
$85

It's been busy days here at the studio and home...My wonderful son has settled in somewhat; however is suffering from altitude sickness at the moment.  I FINALLY had a moment to sit down at my easel and paint something requested of me for my gallery at Luna's Mandala here in Conifer.  She will sit at the gallery for a couple of weeks and then I will put her in ETSY.  Anyone who is interested in purchase before then can contact me at art4life44@hotmail.com.

As always I painted "Dragonfly" on a slightly textured panel in oil.  There is a little charcoal peeking through here and there...FUN DOINS!

I've put her in this recycled, handmade frame.  I'd say the colors show most accurately in this frame...there is a tiny hint of the green in the background with a splash of blue at bottom.
