"Peepers" is a soft little sweetheart for sure!  Her pet parents are Dave and Terri Johnson; my brother and sis in law!  They no longer have Peepers because they think a neighbor loved her so much they just had to have her, but none the less, they have fond loving memories of her.  I hear that she did NOT like to take any pills.  She would hold it in her mouth for 5 minutes and would then spit it out! HA.  This story made me laugh when painting Peepers!

This little sweetie was a challenge for me as it became so blurry by the time I cropped it and blew it up so I could see...I admit I had to work on her a few times.  At first I didn't see that she had a dark area to the left as she was the same value as the carpet behind her...but, I finally figured out her shape and on I went.

This was a fun couple of paintings for me.  Laura Alsman; the pet mom to Big Mamma was so sweet when I told her I wanted to use pinks to paint her baby.  At first it was going to just be the pink cow, but then I thought how cool it would be to paint Big Mamma like I would do in the fauvist fashion; with the darks being dark purples and blues...and THEN, in order to show how it is more important to get the VALUES correct than color.  Value is the light and dark in a painting.  SO, I worked REALLY HARD to keep the drawing as exactly the same as the first Big Mamma so you would not be distracted by a different drawing, and focus on how BIG MAMMA reads cow no matter her color.  It was a fun thing to do!!  Check them out side by side!

Big Mamma Pink has her frame choices as well.  I find that I go back and forth on which is my favorite.

"Big Mamma"

I love this cow!  First of all it is a cow...FUN, second, she is the first in a tiny series of two where I demonstrate how color is NOT the most important part of a painting!  Value is really what makes or breaks a painting.  Today's "Big Mamma" is painted after the fauvist fashion with what has become my signature dk blue and dk purple colors instead of grey and black.  The strokes are simple and strong, but not detailed.  I love her strong colors...Big Mamma is the pet cow to Laura Alsman, and I thank her for sending in her pet.  I hear Big Mamma has given her lots of babies...way to go Big Mamma!!  This number 18 has been Big Mamma's number since she came to Laura's family, so it was important to her that the number be included.  FUN!

Tomorrow I am debuting "Big Mamma Pink" to show exactly what I am talking about when I say color doesn't really matter...check back tomorrow to see the other version...both of which work just fine for me! :)

"Hawkeye"

"Hawkeye" is a beautiful lab/hound mix pup that is pet kid to yesterday's pet mom Kelina Moore.  Kelina was so sweet to send me these two beautiful photographs. In fact, her pet pup Dodger from yesterday sold.  This brings up a point I want to make again.  When I set this project up I made it clear that no one is obligated to purchase their pet portrait.  BECAUSE I set this up with no obligation I put them up for sale on my website just for general sale.  Often these portraits sell quickly, and sometimes they sell before the pet parent can get to the computer.  SO, I do make this offer, that IF a pet parent is going to purchase, but for whatever reason can't do it right away, please let me know.  I will gladly put your pet on hold for sale for a bit until you can get it done.  JUST SAYIN!

Hawkeye is full of very bold color right out of the tube, so I'm sayin he fits nicely in the fauvist part of my project within my style!!  FUN!  Take a look at his frame ideas (remember the frames are not included in purchase).  You can find these frames at pictureframes.com.  Go to their floater frame section.

Remember Floater Frames are frames that show all edges.  It is perfect for the paintings that have important parts right up next to the edge as traditional frames take 1/2" on all sides.  To frame these MDF panels (that are 1/8" thick" I have cut foam core (you could do cardboard) the exact size of the painting, and attached 2 permanant mounting squares (made by Scotch and can be found at Walmart) to the foam core...and then press the painting on.  All you have to do is either glue or attach the foam core to the bottom section of the foam core (this makes sense when you have it in front of you), and voila` you are in the frame!!  They send you wire and such for the back as well...just attach that and you are done!!

"Dodger" is a 9 year old boxer whose pet mom is Kelina Moore.  I loved adding all the color straight out of the tube to give Dodger that fauvist seasoning that this project is based on!

Dodger looked pretty good in the floater frames I got in order to show you examples.  I think I enjoyed him best in the Maple Floater Frame, but he looks pretty good in all of them!

Nelson's pet mom is also Amber; mom to Alex as well.  Nelson was awesome..I loved that stately face...or is it a curious one!  FUN either way.  I played with lighting...it wasn't really present in the photo, but the bright yellowy orange is, to me the light side...and the bluey purple the darker side...any way you look at it the color is FUN!

I think Alex was fun and challenging at the same time.  The photo is a bit grainy, but I could see enough to get a likeness...and then I got to play with color.  The bright right out of the tube orange was a fun background and loved the bits of color I snuck in here and there!

This photo was taken on Alex's 16th birthday...loved the party hat!  Alex's pet mom is Amber and I'm so glad she allowed me to paint this pup!  Here are my frame ideas so you can see how Alex would look in different colors.  They are all the floater frames I got from pictureframes.com in their floater frame section.

"Cookie" is a sweet dachshund/terrier mix.  This is another basically white pup that has wonderful color right out of the tube making up the darks and lights that go with a white animal.  Again, I worked to keep the brush strokes as bold as I could given my abilities...keeping in line with the fauvist flair.  Cookie comes painted in oil on panel.  You can frame Cookie in your favorite 6"x6" frame, or even set on an easel.  Cookie's pet mom opted to remain private, which is totally OK!

"Bumper" is a little Shih Tzu pup that came to me recently.  Bumper's owner did not want to be identified, WHICH is totally acceptable.  I'm just grateful that this photo came my way.  I found it interesting to keep the brush strokes simple and bold and had fun adding color from the tube to keep the fauvist tradition of this project alive!

"Shaggy" is another of those free photos I've been telling you about.  When I first began this project I grabbed a few to get me started, but people started sending in photos so quickly I've just been scattering them throughout this project.  I LOVE this dog!  I believe he is an English Sheepdog, but you animal lovers out there may be able to pinpoint his heritage a little more accurately.  How to interpret him with no eyes of any import showing...but that tongue!  Since he is white, and I LOVE the contrast of white against strong color, I left the white appearance and strengthened shadow colors with blues and that tongue and that nose! WHAT FUN!  He lives in the fauvist style and I'm glad of it!

Shaggy was actually painted and photographed a bit earlier as I actually started painting daily a couple weeks before February 1 in order to stay fluid while I'm in Omaha taking care of my newborn granddaughter Gracyn and her brother Paxton...so I only have the pic with the black floater frame, but you get the pic!  FUN!

"Tucker"

"Tucker" is my friend Becky Silver's grand dog.  IE...he is pet dog to her son.  I've not met Tucker, but her spoke to me immediately.  His coloring just begged for strong oranges and yellows with blue darker areas. Tucker is painted in oil on a 6"x6" slightly textured panel.  He comes ready to frame in your favorite frame, or can sit on an easel as he is!  

IF you are interested in information about framing, I have found some fun frames that are called Floater Frames at pictureframes.com. The three below are examples of a floater frame.  Floater frames show all the edges of a painting.  These are all wood frames.  I have developed an easy way to frame them.  For a bit of added thickness, I get a piece of foam core. I cut it the size of the painting.  Glued it on to the bottom "shelf" of the floater frame (the lowest section; it will be obvious when you get the frame).  I put permanent sticky tabs on the foam core and pressed on the painting and it is in!
