"CAPITOL PEAK" © SAUNDRA LANE

"Capitol Peak" is the third in my Mountain Summit series.  This one was a favorite of one of my artist friends; Mark Oehlert who used to live here, but now resides in San Antonio.  Things I learned about Capitol Peak today as I painted her was she is a 14er; some 14, 137' high.  Many consider her one of the most difficult climbs, I'm guessing due to the straight face.  She is found in the rugged Elk Mountains and Maroon Bells here in Colorado.  Here is "Capitol Peak" in a suggested frame.
I think it will be Longs Peak next; a favorite of another of my artist friends...so stay tuned!

I am also busy in my studio working on my next largish piece that will be aspen.  I have started the background in acrylic and stamping, and then added papers...next will be to decide the tree placement and paint them...with a bit of oil to finish up I believe.
2'x2'

I missed a wonderful trip to my mother's on Easter Sunday due to weather...I also missed seeing my grand babies...sure love these people!

"MT. OF THE HOLY CROSS" 6X6 OIL ON PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

This is my first "requested " favorite peak/summit from my followers on facebook.  Anyone who wants to send a request to see their favorite peak/summit anywhere in the world is most welcome to do so.  You are not under any obligation to purchase it, I just want to amass a collection!  Of course IF you love it, I won't be sad, but that is not my main motivation!  Here I've shown the example I think would make for a great frame.  I just love these floater frames where you can see it all the way to the edge!
I have been working HARD to simplify my on line presence...My website address is now saundralane.com.  I'm SaundraLaneOnEtsy in my ETSY shop...speaking of my ETSY shop...I've also made some big changes there as well.  This has needed to be done for a long time...I've taken all my paintings big and small out of ETSY and those still available are all not safely in my WEBSITE.  I've added a new section to my website as I want this series to have it's own location...so these summits will be held in the section aptly called "Mountain Summits".  BUT I DIGRESS...ETSY...now holds all things I do crafty!  Now there are a good little collection of my canvas baskets that were formerly only found at my shop in Conifer; Luna's Mandala...and, I've also included in my ETSY shop my fun new affirmation sticks.  What are they you might ask???  Well, they are dowels that have been wrapped in leather and hemp and other naturalish strings with a phrase or two added and maybe even a stone or two...they are meant to AFFIRM you as a person...UPLIFT you...make you remember how great you are!!  SO, the new ETSY shops are going live on April 5, but here is the link to my new preview page so you can see what it is going to look like!

IF you have not gone over to my website to sign up for my newsletter and you want to get in on the drawings for free paintings and creative things I encourage you to do so.  I will announce one in my newsletter every month.  I won't newsletter stalk you, but I will send them out every couple of weeks or so to update you on new work and give aways and contests...so, please have fun with it...CLICK HERE to go to my website and just click on newsletter sign up.

"MT. EVANS MINI" ORIGINAL OIL and PAPER COLORADO MOUNTAIN PEAK © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

Along with the art give aways and the new project that folks can order a "slice of life" painting, (CLICK HERE to read about the project.) I am starting a fun little series of mountain peaks.  I started it off with Mt. Evans; which is my go to mountain, but have asked folks to write me or comment the name of THEIR favorite peak...I'll add them to the growing list and paint them and then put them in my ETSY shop.  Just a way to stay fresh!  SO, if you have a favorite peak, let me know, I'll add it!

Mt. Evans Mini has some fun papers woven throughout, but is mostly oil with a smidge of modeling paste when needed.  I have included a photo of a frame suggestion so you can see how fun it would be framed!  This is a floater frame.  I enjoy them as you can see all the edges.  Mt. Evans Mini would also look great on a small easel or sitting on a shelf...

"ASPEN DREAMS" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA © SAUNDRA LANE

This fun aspen painting is a re-work that I was just never happy with. As you know, most artists that
have something on their wall will eventually find something that bugs them and work on it some more...that's why I always tell my collectors if you see something you like you best get it or I'll re-work it! lol...HOWEVER, I believe it usually makes it better...as in this case I think.  Below you see the original version.  It had lots of texture on the left side, but honestly, unless you were pretty close you didn't notice it...that always bugged me, so I added a bit of paper and a tad more oil with some texture pattern here and there and I believe it works so much better.  I'm laughing as the two colors of background are merely the way the light was when I photographed it. Let's see if I can describe the color...well, it is a lightish or tinted version of turquoise with a hint of ultramarine thrown in here and there as a mix...so, the one up top seems closest on MY monitor, but every monitor is different...perhaps a touch more greenish...so take my word for it...it works! lol
IF you have followed me for very long you may notice that all of a sudden the Galloway has dropped off of much of my on line presence...my website address is NOW saundralane.com.  My new ETSY address is saundralaneonetsy.com.  NO, I still have my wonderful hubby...we are STILL and always will be together...I'm just simplifying is all.  This will take some time, but I felt it important.  SO, take a gander at my website...saundralane.com. It is still in process, but I've cleaned it up and simplified some things...and I will be announcing some contests and on line projects in the near future through my newsletter on my website, so if you have not yet signed up, hop over to my website and sign up! FUN DOINS!

"MT. EVANS IN FAUVE" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA LANDSCAPE © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

See it in person at SUMMER ART MARKET
June 13-14, 2015
Come visit me at booth #54
I've painted my view of Mt. Evans in every medium I've worked in, every style, so it only seemed fitting to paint it again with my current experimental way of working as I weave my way to artistic growth.  There was a base of acrylic put in that you can see here and there peeking through.  After that I started painting in oil.  I used a palette knife for a good portion of this painting.  I also worked with stamps and stencils to pull in pattern; which you can see most obviously in the sky, but if you look closely you can see the honeycomb pattern repeated; though more subtly in the foreground.  There is also a bit of paper throughout as well.

This detail image shows the paper peeking through as well as the honeycomb shape repeated

The trees are applied almost intuitively...not much emphasis on realism; thus moving ever more close to my need for more abstract in my work.  The rocks are painted more with color as was the fashion of the fauves (wild beasts as they were called in the late 1800's and early 1900's)

This painting comes ready to hang.

"BEAR VISIT" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA ON STRETCHED CANVAS © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Bear Visit"
18"x18" mixed media on stretched canvas
$500

Living in the mountains affords me a wonderful opportunity to capture some of the wildlife that comes to visit from time to time.  This young bear is one of our visitors.  "Bear Visit" is painted in mixed media on a stretched canvas.  The background is largely acrylic with the trees painted in acrylic over paper.  The paper is very thin, but it seems to give a bit more depth.  There is acid free paper added to the background as well. The bear and some detail is painted in oil.  Bear Visit will be ready to ship on September 10, 2014 when the oil parts are dry.  "Bear Visit" comes ready to frame in your favorite 18x18" frame.
detail

As I said, this was painted to go in my own house...but, as with most paintings in my life, this one is for sale too...so I will enjoy it while I have it.
Here is the frame that it will live in while it is with me...I'm lovin the turquoise this year!!  HOWEVER, when the painting sells, this frame stays with me...I have an idea for an abstract that may live in it later...BUT, for now..."Bear Visit" lives here!
I'm enjoying the last of our sunflowers for this year...the deer have chopped off leaves on some of them down low...but that is life on the mountain!

TWO PAINTINGS IN ONE! "ETHAN'S BEARS" AND "EARLY MORNING ASPEN" © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Early Morning Aspen"
PRINT
Yes, you will notice that this painting is shown as a print.  IT DID exist as is at one time, but it was a beginning for a possible nursery painting for my grandson Ethan.  When I was painting it, I sort of loved it in it's aspen"y" state, so I took a photograph as it was before I added baby bears to it.  I thought it would be a nice print, thus putting it in my FINE ART AMERICA shop.  Kinda different, but kinda cool to have two paintings in one!!  FUN!

SO, I painted this 12"x25" cradled piece for my grandson's nursery...IF mom and dad see it and decide it is what they want...They had originally mentioned some of the animals like I did for my grandson Paxton, but I wanted to play with this idea first.  It is totally ok with me if they still want baby animal prints like I did for Paxton, but I thought of their nursery colors and just had to try...I'm waiting to hear back on which theme they want to go with. Here is the final product with the baby bears...it's a toss up to me...a fun bit of bear"y" hijinks I'll give it that!

For now I'm calling it Ethan's Bears...but if it doesn't go to live with them, I'm sure I can come up with a new title...Below are some detail shots...the sun went away, so you will notice some definite color change, and some reflections from my camera...but you get the idea!

FUN DOINS IN THE STUDIO FOR SURE!

We just returned from my mother's house in Oklahoma City for a 5 day visit.  I have to say it was quite an experience!  We drove to our airport on the day of a below zero cold snap.  It took over 2 1/2 hours to get there...flew to OK City...landed in a major snow and ice event for them!  We passed cars that had spun out and even turned over...a scary beginning, but that wasn't the end of it...OH NO...during that time it was SO cold and ICY that we were unable to get out save one partial day.  Our power went out, and while I was on the phone reporting the outage there was a 4.5 earthquake! I'd never felt one before, so it was a bit disconcerting.  And, to top it off I was sick the whole visit! WOWIE!  I forgot my camera, so tried to limp along with the camera in my ipad...HOWEVER, since the IO7 update I haven't been able to transfer photos from it to my computer...don't ya just love those updates!! :)  SO, I'm leaving you today with just the visuals of the trip I "painted" for you in words!

"THE RED BARN" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA ON PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

48"x18" mixed media on cradled panel
$1,400
Available through Creations Fine Art in Louisville
If you are in the area, stop by the first Friday in October at Creations to see it in person!

Mt. Wilson in Colorado is one of our hardest of the 14ers to climb.  Mt. Wilson is set about 10 miles from Telluride in the San Miguel Mountains.  I call these "long skinny" paintings my "layer" paintings as they are not part of a specific scene, but start with the subject matter at top and move down with different bits and pieces of things that are in and around the area.  These "long skinnies" are fun to weave things in as I move down the panel, imagining the feelings of standing within the scene and painting to highlight the joy of the moment!  "The Red Barn" is painted on MDF panel with cradled sides stained to compliment.  I use a water based stain on my cradles so if anyone would rather paint their sides it is an easy application!

I was asked to present a demo for another local art guild on my paper casting process.  It was a great opportunity to experiment with my casts a little more to see what else can be done with them...I've come up with a couple new things...stay tuned to the end result of those!  My goal was to incorporate the casts in fine art as well as crafts.  Remember that experimenting gives an artist great opportunity for growth! If you are in town and want to see the process it will be October 10 at 7 p.m. at the Rox Bar and Grille upstairs.  The Rox is just east of C-470 on Ken Caryl!
I created a collage of some of the work I've already done with my casts.  Happy memories!

"ASPEN ON GUANELLA PASS" ORIGINAL OIL ON GALLERY WRAP CANVAS © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Aspen on Guenella Pass"
12" x 4" mixed on gallery wrap canvas
$85 + $8 shipping in US

This strong contrast piece is a bit of oil and paper all rolled into one.  I LOVE, LOVE adding paper to my compositions when I can...it's just a little more ME!  I wanted to show the whole piece, thus the photo expanded to the wall a bit...This gallery wrap canvas is 1.5" deep. This is from our trip to visit the aspen this past year up Guenella Pass above Georgetown here in lovely Colorado.  There is an area where the aspen are so tall and skinny...those are my favorites of all!

Yesterday I was trapped up here once again...SNOW...AGAIN...but I enjoyed our visitors ouside my kitchen window...They are so comfortable with me now they often don't even turn around to check me out...
I call this one "Backsides"...not only are the deer not interested in smiling at me, but a little other visitor was showing me his "best side" as well...tee hee!

I call this "Birdy's Got Back"...
and, FINALLY...I got a profile at least...

and, then...I get these moments to see my grandson...and suddenly the snow doesn't seem SO bad...
His dad called this one "Big Gulp"...

"WINTER ASPEN" ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA PAINTING OF ASPEN TREES IN WINTER © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Winter Aspen"
5" x 7" gallery wrap deep canvas
$47 + $8 shipping in the US
available through LUNA'S MANDALA in Conifer, CO

This little bit of winter fun is on it's way to my gallery in Conifer; Luna's Mandala. IF you love it and are not here, just let me know and we'll get it to you!

I've painted this little gallery wrap canvas in acrylic over a good bit of modeling paste built up. It is ready to hang or, it's depth enables it to also be set on a shelf.  These little canvases are a bit "natural" in shape, so I've included what they actually look like on the canvas...they aren't smooth and sharp edged like my cradles, but for some pieces I think it adds to the character of these little ones. You can see that I've just added a bit of what is going on to the sides. I rather like the abstracty nature it evokes!
